A Palm Beach FL paper in 1994 ran a column about the Unabomber by George McEvoy who used to work for the SF Examiner. In the column he claims a colleague back at the SF Examiner had cracked the 408:

Anyone have any more info on his claim? If his colleague broke it, why is there no mention of it anywhere else?
Other mentions from McEvoy’s other articles in 1994:

Here’s an article from 2007 about McEvoy and the Zodiac.
I find this a bit suspect. He misspelled suspects names. He got key facts wrong (".22 caliber rife"). He falsely claims if the newspaper asked Zodiac if that was his name. He also repeats the debunked idea that Zodiac was a marksman when in fact there is no evidence of that. All his shooting took place at close range – often extremely close range.
Still, I think researching the Barnhardt guy is a good idea.
