Can anyone identify the three "stamps" which appear inside a 1967 edition of David Kahn’s "Codebreakers: The Story of Secret Writing".

It’s possible these were part of the original print on the front endpaper.

I have no idea.

I found the diagonal pattern "HKXA" interesting.
Similar to the 340 reading

Could it be a public library type of stamp?

It does seem to be used that way on the other document examples I found.

Yeah I saw that after I posted. Nice find by the way.

Seems someone had a sense of humor at least.

It looks like Greek lettering but I’m not sure.
In some of the documents it almost looks like it’s used to redact or cover up sensitive information.

Maybe it is covering the name of the library stamped on it.

Btw….how did you go from 1 in 50k to 1 in 17k odds on the 340 pivots.

Thank you, very interesting. I thought the one in the book might be part of the cover design. But having now seen all the other examples you’ve shared…Maybe early QR codes… ;)

Definitely looks like some kind of redacting "stamp"? Great finds by the way.

Thanks very much for that. Never seen it before. I’m assuming the stamp in the book is part of the design as opposed to hiding confidential information. That would be ironic. And for a would-be encipherer, just lazy. Thanks again.

My guess is info about the previous owner of the book was printed there and someone decided to protect it.
