Yes, nulls are a very good hypothesis for the 340.

Here is a solve for your message, you corrected the last row right? Though, after removing the last row from the smokie42 I still cannot get a clean solve on it. Without nulls I have the smokie42 up to about 21k, not entirely bad.

By the way, thanks for maintaining and organizing this thread and all your work on the Zodiac ciphers. I really don’t know where we would be without you.

I would like to second this sentiment. Many thanks to smokie for all your hard work! I can’t even keep up with all of it. :)

Thank you, too, Jarlve, for your continuing efforts. I quite enjoy the back and forth you and smokie have been having with all the transposition variations. It is helping to narrow down the playing field of possibilities for Z340.

Here are smokie44A, smokie44B and smokie44C.

All have one row that is mostly null, and about 45 symbols. One null row is close to the top or bottom and should theoretically be easiest to solve. One has a null row about 1/4 of the way up or down from the bottom or top, and should be second easiest to solve. One has a null row near the middle, and should be the most difficult to solve.

Thanks doranchak and smokie,

Smokie44a and b solve very well but smokie44c does not get much above 21k. Strangely the solver prefered to place the null operation as the last step with smokie44c. Did you not transpose some part of the message or perhaps sandwiched the segment in between 2 transpositions? Or a problem with my transposition solver? Without nulls smokie44c returned a (better) solve of 21755 with a strange combination of operations.

Here is smokie42 matrix before and after the nulls. It was period 17 but the nulls make it look like period 18. You would probably get a better solve by selecting the chunk of message outlined in heavy black. Smokie44 coming soon.

Okay, something to think about, I really like that scheme – allot.

Here is the matrix for smokie44c. But it is only period 22 and one row with 13 nulls. Nothing different than the other messages.

Here is smokie45ABC. Same as before, but with about 63 symbols.

Thanks smokie,

There may be some problems with the null operator within my transposition solver. I’m not entirely sure yet, but it seems to be a problem between the alloted search space, local maxima and a low amount of iterations per restart of the transposition solver. I started a new optimization run (without the null operator) including all your transposition ciphers (smokie9 to 15 and 39 to 45) and wil report back around next weekend with the results. So that we know what schemes may cause problems.

O.k., Jarlve. Next weekend sounds just fine. I am flexible. Have a good week!

I am still here but have allot of work with the transposition solver.

The solving machine just finished its 4th global restart. That means that all the ciphers I’ve included have had 4 restarts @ 10000 iterations with a maximum of 3 operations not including a null operator. I took a sneak peak in the smokie45abc directories and here are their current scores, smokie45a: 21461, smokie45b: 21066, smokie45c: 23430.

I am going to keep this running all week so that all ciphers go through plenty of restarts. Ofcourse I’ve also included the 340 in normal, mirrored, flipped and reversed variations so it will be very interesting to see how everything compares at the end of this week.

Nick Pelling has a new article on the Zodiac ciphers, I have yet to read it: http://ciphermysteries.com/2017/02/19/i … aphic-head

Here are the results from the transposition solver, it ran through about 40 restarts @ 10000 iterations for each cipher. If you want to look at the solutions: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B5r0r … HdWc3Z3VUk

Smokie,

Could you create a suite of transposition ciphers with multiple inscription rectangles? The format of having 9 ciphers per hypothesis (3 plaintext, 45 symbol and 63 symbol ciphers) is perfect if you can manage it.

Ideally, I’d like you to come up with a short list of what you think are the best hypotheses for the 340 (assuming transposition with its periodical bigram peaks). And create a suite of ciphers for each hypothesis. Though I don’t want to bury you with work. It would help me allot with tuning the transposition solver AND give us feedback for each hypothesis. Eventually, if there are hypotheses that remain difficult for the transposition solver then these could be looked at individually later on.

Here is smokie46ABC.

They are all 1:1 substitutes, or plaintext. All have multiple complete inscription rectangles that are the same size, though not too many. Just a few medium sized rectangles. Since 340 doesn’t have a lot of good divisors, they all have some untransposed text at the end of the message, whether at the top or bottom of the cryptogram. Transcription could be LRTB, RLTB, LRBT or RLBT.

When I was trying to solve the one that you made for me, the one with the two incomplete rectangles, I could get bits and pieces of the message by untransposing chunks of the message at the predominate period, even if I had the rectangle size incorrect. That may help with 1:1, but probably not with 63.

This work load is perfect for me right now, but I was working on your message a little bit this morning. I will look for some good plaintext for smokie47ABC and smokie48ABC. I am very happy to be involved and am feeling optimistic.
