On the back of the Halloween card envelope Zodiac wrote “sorry no cipher” diagonally twice forming an X.

He wrote one diagonally upper left to lower right as your decode of the 340 starts. Looks about same angle as your solution.

The other is written from lower left to upper right. Have you tried this starting method for another possible solution?

I noted, this must look hella suspicious now.

Believe it or not, the map was made as an example, and I probably didn’t care to check it thoroughly. But even then, the solution would have been garbled up and I probably would have overlooked it, because in all these years I learned to trust on the AZdecrypt score. I always believed more in a 2d-period than a 1d-period so that is why I did it like that. There must have been other times where we came close.

yes that heat map shows two 9 row maps and a 2 line map. i always tested my ciphers with the last two lines missing in case they were just junk.
