At the site above is a fun and interesting little tool to help solve the Zodiac 340 Code.

You just type in a letter for a symbol, and it puts that translation throughout the code.

I post this here so anyone who hasn’t seen it can try it. So for all those who have solutions or attempts on this, whether your suspect is Gaikowski, Allen, Houghton, Tarrance, O’Hare, Penn, Kaczynski or UNSUB, give it a shot and see how you do.

Then tell us your results or post the final image here.

I would do it myself but I will be accused of intentional or unintentional confirmation bias, selectivity, subjectivity and who knows what.

What appears below is what I think is a largely correct first stage solution to the 340. I did not create this solution. It was based on the work of Robert Graysmith and appeared in the 1979 FBI file, and was then worked on by some posters at the old ZK board – Kite, Claston, Ed, Obiwan and a few others. I do not claim that all now think this is largely a correct solution, however, I feel it likley is a largely correct first stage solution.

If someone is interested, go to the webtoy code solver site above, and enter in the letters below. You will see – rather amazing – as you type in the first few lines the words "THESE FOOLSHALL SEE" will appear on a lower line, and other words will fill in.

If you are interested in codes I think you will find this an interesting process, and you can then report your results (good, bad, mixed) and if possible screen save the image and post it here.

If after a day or two nobody volunteers I will do it myself, but it would be better if an independent person does it.

You can see that, while it can be debated if this is the "correct" solution, it is in fact honest and within code principles, and that as you fill out the first few rows – I GIVE THEM HELL – it fills in, on its own, THESE FOOLSHALL SEE.

Nobody has yet come up with a better solution than this one right here. It is consistent, no BS, no slanting to any POI, and it works.

And this is just the first stage solution – when you then apply a Caesar Code with the 0-3-6-9 shift values you get complete English langauge sentences like:

WHO SHOULD I KILL NEXT? ASK YOUR GOD THAT KILLS PEOPLE JUST LIKE THE ZODIAC.

This is the first stage solution with some of the words and cryptic words marked.

If this is NOT the intended solution by Zodiac, than it is coincidence that so many Zodiac type words appear – LIST, BOMBS, I GIVE THEM HELL, BALL, etc.

Highly unlikely to be coincidence IMO.

This is what I think is the correct solution:

As you can see above from the posts from Zab and myself, if you type in the first few lines, you will see the words THESE FOOLSHALL SEE pop up and fill in on a lower line.

Not only does this proposed solution give clear words like I GIVE THEM HELL TOO, SEE A NAME and THESE FOOLSHALL SEE, I also discovered that key Zodiac words like LIST and BOMBS appear diagonally! To me that is absolute confirmation that this is the intended first stage solution of the 340. It is impossible that key words Zodiac used would appear by accident like that, together, correct spelling, no anagrams.

I welcome any thoughts. questions, criticisms or other ideas.
