Hello
I started researching about available cryptographic books in English that was published in 1969 or before and Z could have had access to since it seems like a reasonable place to start looking for cipher construction clues and ideas for countermeasures to frequency analysis.
That is, books that describe cipher systems in order to educate the reader. Books about cipher/war history is of no interest here.

So I was wondering if someone already had looked into this and could share their findings?

So far I have found the following:

Hi borkky. I really like your widget, and being able to cast the 340 into 19 columns.

See here for another list of books:

I live in a Mid West college town with a huge university. One day I went to the library and pulled all of the older cryptography books off of the shelf into a big pile. I turned the pages through all of them looking to see what Zodiac may have been influenced by. I saw a lot of hand drawn pictures showing route transposition and various geometric shapes. Discussion of nulls, and transposition of more than one symbol at a time. Also keyed columnar transposition, and all different kinds of substitution and some examples of combined transposition / substitution. I didn’t find any examples of combined route transposition / homophonic substitution. Reading through the books gave me a lot of ideas though.

Thank you for your efforts. I will take a look at your books.
