S., is that article, perhaps, from 1974?

I don’t know for sure, I’m not a subscriber. Looks possible though.
Very confusing.

Bingo, Smithy!!!!! That article WAS written in 1974. Starless apparently put the wrong year on it. The 1974 VTH is the only year of the newspaper that is online at the newspaper websites.

Thank you for solving that mystery!

I found this July 3, 1969 VTH article that has been transcribed by Starless at her website. I am confused after reading it. Christina is not mentioned in the article. It is obvious that Christina did some work on the Miss Firecracker contest because we have the letter thanking her for her efforts. She apparently did not win that contest as someone else is named as having won. Christina is not mentioned as a contestant?????

BIGGEST EVER JULY 4 PARADE

Ruth White, sponsored by the Springstowne Association, amassed a record number of points to win the Vallejo Chamber of Commerce’s annual "Miss Firecracker" competition for queen of the 4th of July Parade.

Miss White’s 8.370 points, gained for selling Independence Day buttons was the largest total ever according to contest committee chairman Malcolm Tipp.

First runner-up was Christine Thomas, sponsored by the Downtown Association.

Following in order were Roberta Shanke, Denise Karry, Debbie Howard, Patti Horst, Julie Mareos, Annet Adkins, Jeanette Lake, and Cathy Mueller.

Their efforts raised $3,000 to help the Independence Day Committee put on it’s annual July 4 Parade Thursday.

Christ Pappakostas, general chairman of Independence Day activities congratulated the girls for a fine job.

Pappakostas promised this year’s celebration will be the biggest and best ever. There is no need for anyone who lives within 50 miles of Vallejo to plan on leaving town as Vallejo will be the place to be on July 4," he said.

Vallejo’s big Independence Day parade, which will open a day long schedule of special Fourth of July events here Thursday will begin at 10 a.m. at Tennessee and Amador Streets.

The line of March will be West on Tennessee street to Sonoma Blvd. south to Georgia Street and west on Georgia past the reviewing stand on Sacremento street where it will disband.

Parade awards will be made in a ceremony at 3:30 p.m. at the office of the Vallejo Chamber of Commerce at 2 Florida st., following a series of band concerts, baseball games, a pom-pon girl competition and a demonstration of Riverside warfare tactics at 2:30 p.m. in Mare Island Channel by Units of Coast Division No. 11 from Mare Island.

The Fourth of July program will wind up with a lighted boat parade in Mare Island Channel at 9 p.m. followed by an aerial fireworks display at 9:20 p.m. over Mare Island Strait just south of Vallejo Yacht Club.

This is confusing, looked at a few times myself trying to make the pieces fit. Whoever posted this article on Starless’s Coldcase site, thought they had the right Christina, but Christine Thomas is not correct. I’d have to pull out my notes, but I feel Smithy found the correct date of 1974.
So, the above article has nothing to do with the July 4, 1969 Parade.
Here is a link for some information regarding, July 4, 1969 Parade: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=1066

An easy mistake – wiki catches me out this kind of way, now and again. ;)
I think it’s great though, to have this local colour even from a few years later – to see the arrangements were still in place, that the title of "Miss FIrecracker" was still in use, and that our friend Christ was still in business. Great.

Did you notice the article shows parts of an article about ‘SLA’, too?
