In his 1978 letter, Z stated:
‘I like friction tape. I have my real name on a small metallic tape. You see, while you have it in your possession, I want you to know it belongs to me and you think I may have left it accidentally. I am athletic. It could be swim fins, or a piece of scuba gear. But maybe you play chess with me. I have several cheap sets in closets all over. I have my name on the bottom of the lid with the scotch tape….My tape is waiting for me all over California.’
On the bottom part of any Scotch tape tin, the only name that can be found is ‘Paul’ (‘St.Paul, Minnesota’..of course you can write any name on a scotch tape tin, however the letter obviously is meant as a riddle, which generally is meant to be solved). You also can play chess with various figures, such as the ‘knight‘. So far we have been looking for e.g. a Paul Knight in Vallejo. In his confession letter (some doubt it, I know..although he referred to his Riverside ‘activities’ later on..), he stated that CJB had given him many brush-offs over the years at highschool (which may imply that he had been on Ramona High together with CJB).
Here is one guy who perfectly matches the profile above..a ‘Paul Knight’ who went to Ramona High. His real name is on the bottom lid of any Scotch tape, he went to highschool together with CJB and you can also play chess with him (and he has light hair such as the ones found at the scene):
Although the guy on the pic is not wearing any glasses, I wouldn’t like to leave this one ignored..
Update: Please note that there was also a Jean knight in Darlene Ferrin’s notebook.

whilst that letter note has never been verified as Zs its still worth keeping it in the spotlight…its a nice fit .. paul knight

Thanks for your feedback..right, the letter was never signed nor has Z referred to the letter explicitly.
However: Z paid credits regarding his ‘Riverside activities‘ in response to an article that had referred to the CJB homicide in detail (as being a Z crime). By responding to this article (referring to his Riverside activities in connection with the CJB homicide/article), her murderer or a copycat would have confessed to this crime (even if the author hadn’t killed her). However, as Z had indeed performed various murders and his handwriting was authentic in the credit-paying letter as well, I do believe that he was rather the killer of CJB than any kind of a copycat. Z also once even distanced himself from other crimes, such as the bomb attack on the SF police station.
In addition to that, the confession letter contains various details only the killer of CJB would have known, e.g. how he had manipulated her car (ripping off some electric cables), how he had killed her (e.g. the throat slashing). It’s somewhere in the FBI reports, too, as far as I know. In 1999 the confession letter was described as "Possible forged letter by Zodiac claiming responsibility for homicide". As long as it is not proven that the letter had been written by Z, there might always remain some uncertainty..but a logical chain is, shortly described, the following:
1.) CJB was murdered
2.) The confession letter contains details only her killer would know
3.) Article finds out about a possible connection between Z and CJB
4.) A known killer explicitly responds to that article and claims responsibility of his ‘Riverside activities’ (meant is the CJB homicide, as this was the content of the article)
5.) Z being the killer of CJB (conclusion..wrong?)
Name on the bottom lid of a Scotch tape – Paul. Maybe you play chess with me – Knight. Brush-offs she had given me during the years prior – Ramona High. Zodiac symbol in the drawing of the 1964 Ramona High yearbook – unique Z symbol. And then adds a small but important detail to all of this: There indeed is a ‘Paul Knight’ in the same yearbook.
Of course it may be accidential. A Paul Rook or Paul King would do it as well. But the match is sort of perfect. The combination of a Paul and a ‘chess’ last name is, imo, more than accidential.
DNA would prove. Handwriting analysis might do it as well.

Update..
There is a Sam D Knight Sr., not too far away from Ramona High (Jurupa Valley, Camino Real). This could be Paul Knight’s father, thus the original address of Paul Knight. If we can place this Sam Knight e.g. to Vallejo, it could link Paul Knight to Vallejo, too.
By the way…PAUL Stine..PAUL Avery..PAUL Ferrin (Dee). There also is a JEAN KNIGHT in Dee’s address book, too.

Assuming Z to be approximately 6′ 2” tall, he would in fact be taller than the average height of Californian men (approx. 5’8” to 5’10”). This difference could actually be four inches.

Not knocking your theory Q but offering some additional thought.
The inventor of scotch tape was a man named Richard Drew. He was born in St. Paul Minnesota and died in Santa Barbara California. He named the tape "Scotch" because back in those days "Scotch" meant cheap (cheap sets?). His initial invention didn’t work too well and that’s what everyone called it at first. So he went with it. Richard Drew worked for the 3M company in St. Paul. 3M was first founded as the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company. (Possible Z) 3M not only made Scotch tape but also made metallic tape, chess sets in the late 60’s to early 70’s called the 3M Bookshelf Classic and reflective labels. 3M made several types of games including checkers and backgammon. An image of the game from early 70’s can be seen here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/517017230/vintage-3m-bookshelf-classic-chess-set. The reflective labels that 3M made was for scuba gear. These labels would be placed on all scuba gear, including, swim fins.
Added: Richard Drew was also a banjo player for the "Athletic" Orchestra. Just thought that interesting.
Soze
Could be that he meant he was of Scottish descent and/or that he drank Scotch!
