Z mentioned something about his disguise and that he only looks like the sketch when he actually does his ‘thing’.

As there is nothing else on the sketch but his face and the glasses, the glasses itself might be his ‘disguise’. This again would mean that Z usually did not wear glasses.

My feeling is that Zodiac knew he was clearly identified, and said this to try and cast doubt on his appearance to the police.

The real question is how accurate was the post-PH sketch? It wasn’t done with a sketch artist. It was done on an Ident-A-Kit which is essentially a Mr. Potato head where witness pick and choose from a list of hairstyles, eyebrows, lips, noses, etc.

Again, my feeling – not based on anything more than a hunch – is that the famous sketch is not very accurate at all.

I am intrigued by the possibility he was actually a long-haired hippie who blended into the counterculture of the time.

He could have normally had short hair and wore a long wig for his disguise.

Regarding hair:

Mageau said the shooter had "short, curly hair…light brown..almost blonde."

Hartnell said his attacker had brown hair and "…it looked kind of greasy"

The Robbins kids said that the shooter had "reddish-blond ‘crew cut’ hair"

Foulke said that man they saw had "…Light-colored hair possibly greying in rear (May have been lighting that caused this effect.) Crew cut…"

The three co-eds at LB said he had "dark hair" that was parted on one side.

So, three of the five descriptions said his hair was short or "crew cut"

Interestingly, the "widow’s peak" that some many people focus on doesn’t appear in any of the contemporaneous witness descriptions, and seems to have become part of the story decades later.

Zodiac was never seen with long hair.

But, in fact, short light brown to reddish hair does not fit well to dark one.

If there wasn’t the car door as well as the letters, I’d doubt he is the same person.

It would if you’re overweight and walking around in the hot afternoon sun. The sweat would darken hair.

I think it’s likely that Z let his hair grow out between July and September, and then got a buzz cut sometime between the LB attack and the Stine murder.

Someone should add shoulder-length hair to the composites.

Obviously (I say obviously, but here I am having to explain it) Zodiac wouldn’t have needed to disguise himself with a wig at Lake Berryessa since he was planning on covering his head with a hood. ‘

However, the wig would have been useful in Presidio Heights and was sold a mere two blocks from where Zodiac entered Stine’s cab.
