I don’t think that the Vallejo and Hayward Plunges were connected per se. The Hayward Plunge was built in 1936 by the New Deal WPA program and was part of the local park system.

I wasn’t able find an online history of the Vallejo Plunge but it is possible that it was built by the WPA as well. It too is part of the local park system. Both were run by their own separate local governments. Neither Plunges were ever private enterprises as far as I can find.
Not sure if it hasn’t been posted before and if I’m posting it in a correct place at all

That’s a real blast from the past for me. There was a record store in my home town of Lisburn, Northern Ireland in the mid 80’s called ‘IT records’. it was an old building sandwiched between ‘modern’ 70’s concrete monstrosities. The size difference allowed them to use the gable wall of the adjoining building for advertising and it was that image of the ‘it’ girl along with ‘it records’ painted black on yellow.
I bought my first ever Iron Maiden album there which was Number of the Beast on cassette. Also got the tickets for the first gig/show I went to which was W.A.S.P in the Ulster Hall in 1989.
Interesting Zync, thanks for posting that Zazu.

Whoa! Super-duper find. Wow. "signed" Zodiac. Nice.
In the eighty’s a coworker draged me to a watch show ( vintage ) he was a gold buyer . and showed me a Zodiac watch , sea wolf I said "so what" then he explained why it was special
think it was $75-$100 .
That is very cool, Smithy! Any idea what date?

Yeah I wonder if they were ‘reverse’ inspired. God I hope not.
A great find indeed. Not just for the zync but it made me realise something quite interesting, I think. The one thing he never actually did was sign off with Zodiac. He introduced with it and signed off with the crosshair.

Which is the opposite to the order generally on the Zodiac watch faces. But like this ad. Odd, eh Trav?
D., the symbol was introduced in the mid- to late-50’s it seems, as it says to help distinguish the Glorious, and also the superior Rotographic and Autographic Zodiac models, from the Timex’s (and others) which looked very like them. By the 60’s the symbol was definitely firmly established as part of the brand, although you can find watches out there which don’t have it. It’s fun though, that ad, no? I was hoping it would have been in the Chronicle around ’69 but no.
(BTW There’s plenty of info. out there, including lots about the Autographic’s fantastic "innovation", and the diagrams of how they work are interesting too, if you like that sort of thing. A bit Mt Diablo, and a bit "symbol on the Bus Bomb letter", perhaps.)
In 1969 the new big thing was the "ASTROGRAPHIC" – follow this link and go forward to the 60’s section if you’re interested. So there was something new and iconic from them that would have been in the newspapers in ’69, and may have captured our boy’s imagination. Maybe. I’d love to see some adverts for it in the Chronicle. http://www.zodiacwatches.com/store/Zodi … tches.html
What does it mean, this? An older Zodiac? A "geek" watch-fetishist Zodiac? Someone who remembered this ad? Just a coincidence? Who knows.
Let’s find their marketing guy and arrest him.
* Edited to add the ASTROGRAPHIC bit.
As neat as it is to have the symbol and the name together I’m always torn as to it’s significance. Part of me wonders if it isn’t just the most perfect and probably original piece of Zynchronicity (Thank you Ed).
Who made the initial connection BTW. Was it Avery as depicted in the Fincher movie or was that just artistic license and they needed one of the characters to interject the ‘already appeared in newspapers or magazines’ angle?
I still say the name "Zodiac" and his chosen symbol go hand in hand. The symbol is a representation of the solar calendar (along with the million other things) and the movement of the Sun divided by solstices.

Zodiac was well aware that his symbol represented the solar calendar (see Bus Bomb diagram…) as well as representing the movement of hands on a watchface (see Mt. Diablo map…). It is cool Zynchronicity, IMO, that the Zodiac watch incorporates both name and symbol as well but it’s not terribly surprising considering the inherent connection of word and symbol. It might have been Zodiac’s primary inspiration but I somehow doubt it.
Trav is probably aware but that symbol used for The Odinist is Odin’s Cross. Again, the connection is not terribly surprising but it could have been an inspiration as well. If the SLA letter is legitimate, that would really draw a connection to Odin’s Cross. My gut feeling has always been that the symbol was chosen with a recognition that it was multi-faceted and had about a million possible meanings. Zodiac himself used it as a representation of the solar calendar, watch face, as a "target" centering Mt. Diablo and possibly a gunsight. He enjoyed providing inscrutable information that could be interpreted in many different ways and I still believe that Zodiac’s sheer enjoyment of the mindf**k is a really important signature to consider.

I agree, but think it was centered around astrological navigation rather than "what’s your sign"…
