Free Webex-based presentation about Zodiac and his ciphers. There are still a few spots left.
It will be a basic summary of the case and the ciphers for a general audience.

Yeah, unfortunately the window for registration closed some time yesterday.
It will be a Webex call.
But, I will try to record the video and audio and post it on Youtube as episode 4 of Let’s Crack Zodiac. :)

Interesting presentation, for sure.

Regarding minute 23:28, however, could you please verify which document you are referring to? As you mention this to be from the FBI (‘They were also looking into.. ‘. Because I am not sure where to find it but can’t follow the idea of ? being a sequence in the Z340 – thank you.

Also, It should be mentioned that the then-shown patterns were actually not result from FBI analysis; but that is just my opinion (especially as they look pretty much random when highlighting all homophones of a kind; except the first two).

Definitely some great work on the cipher!

Here’s the document:

In the talk I used "M-backwards L-half filled square" as an example because it was a clear cycle in the cipher. Some of those other groups don’t make sense. But the one you point out makes sense if you look at the left dotted I:

I don’t know why they included "BF" though. Maybe they were considering a different reading direction or some other transposition?
And the 4-symbol one with P-backwards Q in it doesn’t make sense to me.

Thanks. The complete ‘BF’ sequence is

B B . F F F F B . F B B B F . F B F B B . F B F B B

with the dots only for better reading and do the latter two subsequences actually repeat. B and F are NOT necessarily equal but could both be frequent bigram letters such as TH, EN, ER, ST etc.. Such letters would – automatically – repeat in such an irregular sequence, too.

The other sequence (M…), however, is an excellent FBI find because it shows an almost perfect sequence repeating over multiple ‘waves’. This encourages to believe the Z340 being a homophone substitution cipher comparable to the Z408. Those three homophones could indeed represent the same letter.

Having a closer look on the ‘neighbors’ of those three homophones, it very soon gets clear that those homophones are often ‘connected’ to frequent homophones such as the + symbol or letters from the IoFBc section or repeating bigrams such as the UZ.

According to SUKHOTIN, this already identifies those homophones as a vowel!

It should be considered, however, that Sukhotin understood the letter T to have similar characteristics to that of a vowel. Therefore, the sequence most likely represents the letter E or T; as e.g. the vowel U would not occur that often. It also is a very good indication that the + symbol does NOT represent the letter E (but e.g. S or L).

The quadruple section (J…) is indeed intact but only repeating twice, that’s it:
