…. the Alfred "Bud" Lord article from the June 1941 from the Official Detective magazine. Not only is there a crosshair symbol depicted on a pictured note, there is the spelling of "clue" as "clew" throughout the article and magazine. The crosshair symbol is just as Zodiac has penned it with the crosshairs extending beyond the circle.
Just to add to the notion that detective magazines likely played a part in Zodiac’s sphere of influence.

Ciphers were featured in many of these periodicals.
An ACA member, in fact, recently finished publishing scans of numerous cipher-related articles and stories from Flynn’s "Detective Fiction Weekly":
“…they may be dealing with one or more ersatz Zodiacs–other psychotics eager to get into the act, or perhaps even other murderers eager to lay their crimes at the real Zodiac’s doorstep.“ L.A. Times, 1969
