Caen authored a children’s book with a story about Chinese New Year and taking a wrong turn on Jackson St.
Interesting that Caen released this Audio Christmas Card. Does it look somewhat like the Tahoe Pines Card in style? Maybe.

An occasional column was given over to serious matters, such as a May 1, 1960, piece on the upcoming execution of Caryl Chessman, which included Caen’s recollection of witnessing a hanging as a young reporter:
Suddenly the door behind the scaffold swung open and the nightmare scene was enacted in a flash. The murderer, his arms bound, was hustled roughly onto the trapdoor, the noose was slammed around his neck, a black mask dropped over his unbelieving face, the trapdoor clanged open, the body shot through and stopped with a sickening crack. For an eternity, the victim twitched in spasm after spasm, and one by one the witnesses began fainting around me. “Doesn’t hurt a bit,” the warden had said.
The Black Mask and twitched in spasm should be noticed.
The 340 Cipher used a Diagonal — top left down approach to the Cipher, it’s interesting Robert Graysmith used HERB CAEN as the first line, thinking the rest of the cipher meant something along with it.
Is it so unlogical to think that maybe it meant what it said — One-NAME – Herb Caen?
From the top left, diagonal + the flipped c + the AEN as the first three letters in the follow-up cipher, is that CHANCE? I don’t know. Could be.
The BLUE PEN ink included is pretty suspect to me, especially since Mr. Caen worked at the SF Chronicle where most of the letters were aimed at.
That is a very IMPORTANT detail of this whole case.

I’m not a clinical Psychologist, but labeling Herb Caen as a Narcissist is definitely not out of the question, which is what we should be looking for.
Also, The Paradice HOTEL in Lake Tahoe is very close to Sacramento, CA. Caen’s hometown. Almost a direct drive.
Caen was known to be MOBILE all around CA, he did visit the Tahoe area often and grew up visiting this area.
This should not be overlooked.
And the fact we know Caen owned an OMEGA Constellation watch which DIRECTLY correlates with ANGULAR VELOCITY – RADIANS, should not be overlooked.

Am I the only one who thinks that since Herb Caen owned an OMEGA Symbol watch, directly lining up with the Mt. Diablo map picture with AN OMEGA SYMBOL in it is very suspect? Caen had AIR FORCE MAP RECON experience.
This is an interesting find. This is the only occurrence of this I found so far, but look how much Herb Caen’s cursive initial of C looks like a Z. Kind of strange.
And here he says Xmas and poem rhyming with miller, as in killer? I don’t know but kind of odd to say.
And if those are 8 ball symbols on the 1970 My Name Is Cipher – Herb Caen’s father was a Pool Hall Operator/Owner, and Caen was known to be a Pool Player.
Plus the angle of the MT Diablo code points North East, lining up with Sacramento, CA. Caen’s hometown.
Let’s also throw in that Mr. San Francisco, aka Herb Caen, had a full MAP right behind his SF CHRONICLE desk, eerily similar to the Mt. Diablo Letter. See the back of the School bus on the bottom right?

Caen mentioned Marvin Beli and OPERA a lot in his columns. Here is an example of both in one column. Even saying M Beli, like the letter.
