I would have expected Z to gloat if he got away with the murders forever. I would have expected a sealed letter at a solicitors, or a mention in a will at least. Yet all we have is silence.
Would you have expected a confession, or do you think he would prefer to keep everyone guessing?
Let’s assume that he’s dead.
That can happen in many ways. He might have been hit by a car. At least one suspect was. He may have succumbed to progressive dementia. There are many reasons. People die suddenly and don’t always have the time to plan things perfectly.
But, more likely, he doesn’t want to confess. Even recently captured serial killers have not confessed to all their crimes.
And, as a final thought, if for example it was Ted K. then we know for sure he would not want to be associated with the Zodiac crimes. Similarly, any other person may have gone on to be associated with other things, perhaps not even criminal. He has a family and lived a relatively normal life towards the end.
I might be wrong but I don’t see many post death confession letters from serial killers popping up.
If his purpose was fame, why not reveal himself long before death? If his purpose was to be immortalized, then it makes total sense for him to keep the world guessing.
Also I can’t recall one real life example of a real death bed confession, at least one where it was definitely proven to be true. Fake ones, yes, many, but I don’t think I’ve ever come across a single real case.
The only alleged death bed confession I have heard of is from a man saying his friend named Louie Myers confessed to being the Zodiac killer. I wouldn’t expect anything in a will because that would be too risky.
I love mysteries and it’s frustrating that there aren’t more death bed confessions. I think by the time a murderer knows they’re going to die they have more than a few regrets and more than a little shame. If nothing else, they may want to spare their family the shame and pain of having an infamous family member.
Zodiac was a screwup. He left behind five breathing victims, two survivors, bootprints, possibly fingerprints and palmprints, tiretracks, eyewitnesses, and earwitnesses. If the APB had gone out for a WMA he would have been locked up in ’69.
If you consider the inhibitions and total repulsion you probably have towards even the thought of death, let alone murder. Then think about what kind of pressure it would take to make you overcome those powerful inhibitions. It obvious once you’ve pondered your own feelings that killers are missing a major part of what most people have by nature. If you are capable of it, you’re probably capable of taking it to your grave.
How many serial killers have been identified and their claims supported with forensic evidence after a death bed confession?
