I hate to poo poo, but I’ve never liked this theory. It’s a little bit too much like saying, I eat a lot of McDonald’s, therefore I’m more likely to work at McDonald’s. The Chronicle had a far bigger readership than it did staff, it doesn’t seem to me in anyway more likely that a member of staff has a greater probability of writing to a paper than a member of the public. Also there’s the old saying that you don’t **** where you eat.

What theory? this is nothing more than highlighting the SF Chronicle. What’s the point? Well the chronicle was probably circulated where Zodiac lived, was Vallejo part of the SFC circulation area?

Oh I see. Actually I’m not sure I do, I’d better read the thread more carefully.

Alright, I’ve reread it and I still think it’s reading causation into correlation. He had to send the letters to somewhere, the Chronicle seems like a logical choice. Many serial killers send letters to the media, I’m hard pressed to think where else one would send them.

When I want to shop for groceries I go to the supermarket, I don’t go their for any obscure reason, I simply go there because they sell groceries. Now if I favor one particular chain, is there any special significance to this? Maybe, I suppose if I went to one of those chains, like what’s that one they have in the US? Wholefoods? I suppose that might say something about an individual. Here in Oz our two major papers are divided somewhat neatly along the left and right side of politics, perhaps being a chronicle reader might indicate some very general things about the type newpaper consumer that Z was, but it seems pretty hairy to me.

Replaceable, it’s not hairy, it’s highlighting the SFC chronicle as being the most prominent aspect of the zodiac killer.

What anyone concludes from that is upto them.

The way i see it, it’s one of the Zodiacs biggest mistakes not throughly explored.

Yes, dyslexia is probably my first undiagnosed language.

The most prominent aspect of the zodiac case is his letters. Its the one thing he was most consistent. Next consistent thing would be the chronicle. You are right. That needs explored.

Well I suppose it is a prominent aspect, it does have that going for it, but I’m not sure it can tell us much. I mean it’s very generic, favoring the Chronicle put him in a very large group of people, it has mass popularity and saturation, it’s positively ubiquitous. It’s like saying the Zodiac wore shoes, we should look into shoes, but saying he wore wingwalkers, then you suddenly have something that only a very small subset of the population does. You might think it’s the same with the Chronicle, I just don’t think so, it just doesn’t seem all that statistically significant.

Having said all that we have the luxury of looking into things that the Police would never have been able to justify looking into. We’re free to explore every avenue, no matter how obscure, so you never know.

I think you are missing the point.

Its only really apparent in hindsight that the oddity existed by mailing to SFC.

There were other papers, this was a national news story, i don’t want to say it but Zodiac letters could fetch a high price by selling the images to other media outlets…

Paul Avery for his part owned such a media trading company…

What’s does it cost to put a hit on some random like stine? Not much, how much could could you sell the rights to reprinting of the letters?

I’d love to know the answer as to how much paul avery etc made from those letters..

If you look at it from that lense, it really begs that questions be asked.
