It is probably nothing but I have wondered if there is a clue possibly hidden in the attacks. It was a lone female, and then a couple who both died, then a couple where the woman died and the man lived, then an attack that was the same way, and then a lone man who died.
Also he always made sure the women were dead. It seems to me that he absolutely hated women.

The two men who lived did so only through sheer luck. If his motivation was his hatred of women he would have killed only women, most likely would have said something about it in his letters. He barely mentions his victims in the letters but concentrates on police instead.
