Regarding Z’s full name, my theory:

First name PAUL, according to ‘bottom lid’ of Scotch tape (it’s written ‘St Paul, Minnesota‘ on those – and ‘Minnesota’ is no first name).

"Maybe you want to play chess with me" – for a long time there was no result on that riddle. KNIGHT etc were assumptions only.

Now I have a second last name, however, which is directly connected to chess: ELLIOTT. In 1970, chess games were produced by a company named Elliott. Thus, someone would have been able to play chess with him / this last name identical game.

A PAUL ELLIOTT of Riverside indeed was a co-student of Cheri Jo Bates, at RCC. So far so good.

Now take a seat everybody: According to the 1966 Tequesquite RCC magazine, this guy was not only a co-student of CJB, but even acting as ‘colonel pickering’ in RCC’s theater play, a leading role in RCC’s "My fair lady".

Although no picture available, yet, the name is an excellent match to Z’s Scotch tape / Chess riddle. He also was a co-student of CJB, placing him somehow ‘at the scene’. Circumstancial evidence is his interest for theater.

All of this might still not be enough.

But if the same guy could be placed to Vallejo or in connection to any of the other victims, he might be our court room candidate no 1.

The "Paul" connection is a good observation, whether the author of the July 19th 1978 letter was deliberately attempting to mislead or not. The Zodiac Killer was known to often respond to the current newspaper articles, particularly the Chronicle. Many of the newspapers immediately prior to this letter detailed the demotion of David Toschi to "pawn shop detail", so the reference to "maybe you play chess with me. I have several cheap sets in closets all over" may have been a play on the word "pawn" in a mocking fashion. In the July 14th 1978 Chronicle article about Toschi, just prior to this latest letter, it contained sections such as "Toschi talked rapidly and nervously skipping from subject to subject like a man who has too much feeling inside him to control", possibly inspiring the Zodiac to state "I am in control" twice. The Zodiac also stated "I have my real name on a small metallic tape", whereas the article spoke of the fictitious names Toschi used when sending bogus fan mail. The article also detailed investigators visiting the home of Toschi and his recollections, stating "I was told to sit in a chair. A tape recorder was turned on" Toschi remembered.

In summation, we have chess and pawn shop detail, the mention of a tape recorder with Zodiac referencing small metallic tape, and Toschi seemingly losing control when Zodiac twice boldly stated he was in control of all things.

I don’t really understand this persistent belief that Zodiac was eager to provide clues to his identity. There’s no evidence he wanted the police or the public to figure out who he was. Quite the contrary, he went to great lengths to conceal his identity, and in the code where he claimed he would identify himself, he lied.

Simply put, I think anyone searching for esoteric clues left by Zodiac for someone to ingeniously discover his name or identity is on a fool’s errand.

Might be true or not. At least he sent the letters so yes he played the cat and mouse game.

Chances are he was mad at the time, playing the part of a madman
In this role he would use the name of the madman not his real name.

And in the z13 he could have a message that says, Anything he wants it to.

Zodiac used swear words, but when the z13 ends with letters N A M .it points to us having to thinking , there was
a name there. Or back in the day Man was over used in public. Was Nam backwards for, Man ?
