Bringing over this thread from the old site. I’m going to do it post by post. A little slower, but easier to follow, I think.

I like the idea that the inclusion of the eyes on the card was in reference to Avery’s article about the JTR San Fran killings with the eye lids cut off as mentioned on the other thread by Seagull and Morf.

It was along these lines I was pondering (ie what would the symbolism in the card represent in relation to Avery, if any.) Still thinking about it but found this. Thought it was interesting that it’s referenced in Harpo Marx’s book "Harpo Speaks" given that some people surmise that Zodiac may have been influenced by Groucho’s version of the Mikado. Perhaps it inspired his opening greeting as well?

Off the main topic, but I’m happy to say that for me it ain’t just a surmise Trav – I believe 100% that the writer of the letter quoting the lyrics from the "Little List" was listening/had listened to – the Groucho version.
Meantime, I’m not 100% sure that the same man sent the Halloween card to Paul Avery. scratch
I’m happy to go along with the idea that he may have been inspired by the article referred to, though. Yep.

Coolio,
Yeah I just said surmise because I couldn’t think of another way to put it. I’m happy enough to accept that he did I just don’t have an opinion either way on it and I guess I felt if I’d said "it is believed that" it would suggest that I believe that when I probably fall into the camp of "I don’t NOT believe it" lol.
EDIT: To add. Regarding whether or not Z sent the HC to PA. I find myself wondering that too at times but I "feel" he did. It’s something I’ll have to read some opinions on and have a little think about.

Yes…without a doubt Zodiac used the Groucho version.
Funny thing–some thought Zodiac made up his own lyrics. Graysmith suggests as much as well. "The girl who never kissed", etc. But word for word, minus what is probably just a bad interpretation of what was said, Zodiac quoted Groucho.

Just adding a note of caution. The lyrics used in the Groucho version of The Mikado are not unique to it. They are simply the basic lyrics by Gilbert that are usually modified by the performers of that particular production. Zodiac could have been listening to any version with the original lyrics.

Dear Smithy, I see you are of the ilk which believes that some of the Zodiac letters and communications are hoaxes or sent by someone other than the Murderer himself. Can you please create a thread which spells out which letters you think are the hoaxes, so that we may discuss?

Yes–there are several tweeked versions of the Mikado, but the one Zodiac wrote about is the Groucho Marx version. I could not find those particular lyrics anywhere else.
If you find them, I would love to know about it.

If I can find my G & S Book, I’ll do a comparison. Just had the thing a few weeks back so, of course, it’s disappeared.

I can relate! I have a place I keep everything, yet it seems everything is not always in it’s place.

It’s always good to check. You’ll also ned the Groucho recording of course. Wink
Thanks for the link references as ever, Tahoe.
Re: A list of letters and "which one is real" well, I think each one has already been discussed in detail on it’s own thread, but if there’s a concensus on addressing ALL of them, then I’ll play.
