‘And all billiard players I shall have them play in a darkened dungen cell with crooked cues + twisted shoes.’

Found out today that this is a reference to another musical/theatre: There is a play called ‘HERE’s A HOW DEE DOO!’, which is also called ‘Twisted cues and elliptical balls’. You can imagine how surprised I was when I read that it is related to Gilbert & Sullivan (Mikado..). There even was a ‘Paul Knight’ featuring it, which finally left me stunning. Securing this theory is that Z had specifically referred ‘billiard players’.

(search for ‘cues’)

It is possible that ‘our’ Paul Knight, classmate of CJB, was involved in that play (you can play chess with me..my name is written on the bottom lid of a scotch tape). Finally this could be our guy..or if not (as it is from Toronto) it at least shows at which Theatre Z could have been involved at (showing both, ‘Mikado’ and ‘Twisted cues and elliptical balls’).

(search for ‘twisted cues’..there is a ‘program’ described regarding the play)

I feel I am missing something here. The earliest date I’ve seen so far is 1981. This is somewhere around 20 years after Zodiac. Paul Knight didn’t write the book or the plays. So how is Paul Knight the student, possible Zodiac killer (who wrote of crooked cues and twisted shoes), tied to a book and play he didn’t write? I would think that if this Paul Knight was originator of the quote then he would have had some hand in the writing of later years. I would expect to see his name instead of Frank Richard.

‘Featuring Paul Knight’ doesn’t tell a lot. However, searching for twisted cues leading to both, g&s (titwillo..) and billiard players (as mentioned by Z) shows that Z not only had known about the Mikado but also about this specific phrase. If that play (and Mikado) has been showed somewhere in CA, any alternative theatre or something, Z had been there (Lamplighters?). It moreless shows that Z’s ties to g&s were closer than we had known so far. One recitation might be accidential, two is rather a proof that he was involved somehow.

It’d be interesting to know if this Paul was in the Bay area..and if he was the Paul from Riverside. Pinterest came up with a comic style poster (couldn’t load it) regarding the play. Z might have been artist (1964 yearbook Z sign..). Asking other people involved could lead to a solution of this case, if possible at all.

This could be the Paul Knight who had featured the music at ‘Here’s a How Dee Doo!’ (twisted cues..):

It should be mentioned that some of the band members were connected to the Greatful Dead, too (some homicides in the surrounding of their community..). They played at the Great American Music Hall, which is only one block away from Geary Street.

Anybody wants to ask him for an autograph?

Not sure if we talk about this one..could be a dead end..the coincidence of G&S stuff with a Paul Knight, however, puts some doubt on it:
