Teenagers and "the best of friends" Doris Karen Derryberry and Valarie Janice Lane were killed with a shotgun and found 13 miles South of Marysville (Yuba County).

They are #40 and #41 in RG’s book. Note that #42 and #43 (here’s the thread that Seagull started: http://www.zodiackillersite.com/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=380) were also a double-homicide.

I found many (11) articles on the 2 girls. I’ll post them all for sake of completeness.

Here’s their picture from the Argus Nov 14, 1973 article that I’ll post in this thread:

Thank you so much for posting these articles, TruthandSoul. I hadn’t read anything on the murders of these two young women before now.

I recall that Doris Derryberry was mentioned by some at various forums as possibly being a victim of Joseph Naso, currently on trial for the murders of four women whose first and last names started with the same initial. Since it appears that Naso strangled his victims and Miss Derryberry was killed with a shotgun it’s doubtful, on the surface, that Naso was the killer.

The article which mentions the murders in the South Dakota park is interesting, same method, killing with a shotgun. I wonder if those murders were ever solved.

The weapon being a shotgun does not fit with Zodiac either but he never used the same weapon twice so who knows. I got the feeling from the articles that the girls’ bodies were left in a fairly remote area. Zodiac left his victims where he killed them and all the crime scenes were not far from public activity, sure to be noticed in a short amount of time, with or without a phone call.

Why does the ‘cyanide pcaked bullets’ sound so familiar?

There is more than one way to lose your life to a killer

Considering the amount of bluffs given by The Z. like "In this cipher is my idenity." X 3 (Jul 31, 1969) without divulging his identity, "…a school bus some morning." (Oct 13, 1969) with "If you cops think I’m going to take on a bus the way I stated I was, you deserve to have holes in your heads." (Nov 09, 1969), that’s 5 big ones, should we bother believing "So I shall change the way the collecting of slaves. I shall no longer announce to anyone. When I committ my murders, they shall look like routine robberies, killings of anger, + a few fake accidents, etc." (Nov 09, 1969)?

"Jerry, just remember, it’s not a lie if you believe it." George Costanza from Seinfeld

Victor,

Could you explain the relevance of this post as it pertains to the subject matter of this thread. I’m not getting what you are trying to say with this post.

Trav.

I don’t know Chief, he’s very smart or very dumb.

I hadn’t thought of the Naso connection :) But you’re right; doesn’t seem to fit with his MO ;)

Juan Corona is the area’s most notorious serial killer, but he was convicted and incarcerated by 1971.

Yes, I was wondering if the SD murders rang a bell with anyone. I’ll do a little digging myself.

Right, I think they were found in a remote area by some boys. Indeed, these don’t seem to entirely fit with Z’s "usual" MO of leaving victims in-place and not far from public discovery.

I wondered if the girls stumbled across/into something they shouldn’t have and were executed. Death by shotgun seems like an unlikely murder weapon for a serial killer.

Yes, that’s an unusual method of overkill.

Trav, If I may…in addition to #24/#25, Sterling & Weber, Derryberry & Lane are the two youngest (I’m aware of) on RG’s list (let’s say, clearly less than 18 yo). So the "school bus" threat, after LE stepped-up its protection, could have evolved into killing school-age children?

And additionally, Z announces changing up his MO, like with S/W. Certainly D/L is a bizarre MO, if any.

Personally, I don’t think Z was involved in #24/#25, and his connection with D/L seems dubious, too.

Yes, the SD murders were solved. Apparently a girl escaped the massacre and testified against the three men, who were all given life sentences. I’ll repost to this one of the final articles (all over the Iowa and SD newspapers at the time):
