Linda Uhlig, of San Francisco, was found in a ditch outside of Half Moon Bay, CA (about 45 minutes South of SF) dead from apparent bludgeoning with a sharp object and stabbing. She was also nearly decapitated (I assume, post-mortem). No mention of rape and she was apparently found clothed with $180 on her.

She’s #27 in RG’s book. Note, her surname is mispelled "Ohlig" in RG.

A rather long article from the local San Mateo Times from March 29, 1972 covered the identification of her body:

I don’t know about the MO in any of these cases, as in how it fits with Zodiac’s but then what was his MO anyway? I don’t know if we got enough of a snapshot of his work to determine that or rather the possible problem being that only have a snapshot that gives us couples, shooting and stabbing. But then there’s PS and CJB.

The bits in this crime that caught my interest were the attempted decapitation and pocket knife. For obvious reasons these being two factors in the CJB case. The other bits don’t fit so well but that’s why I started with the MO angle, he appeared to be creating a fluid and changeable MO so how can we tell for sure what doesn’t fit?

Thanks for posting.

I don’t know Chief, he’s very smart or very dumb.

Trav,

I agree; the near-decapitation and the stabbing with a pocket knife seem reminiscent of CJB.

And yes, I’d characterize the general MO of Z, as a lack thereof. The only thing that doesn’t fit is that it seems she was abducted and her body left in a remote location (Purissima Creek Road is quite a ways from HMB), as all of Z’s murder victims were left in place. The exception could be Kathleen Johns, whom I think could be characterized as an abduction, so again with the "lack thereof"…

But otherwise, the lack of apparent sexual assault, not taking her money (its unclear from the article whether the $180 was on her person — seems like a lot to be carrying in cash in those days — but the article makes it sound like they could find the money), fits-in with the general Z MO.

Here’s the article from the night before (March 28) when they had found the body but not identified her as Uhlig.
Note that there was a pool of blood about 30 feet away on the road turnoff…

Edmund Kemper was said to have begun killing girls and women in May 1972. Linda was killed in March 1972 a couple of months before Kemper’s first known victim. Linda’s injuries were similar to what Kemper was known to do to his victims, dismember and behead. I wonder if Linda could have been the first of his coed victims and was never charged.

That’s a very interesting point. HMB’s an easy drive from Santa Cruz (Kemper’s residence) and IIRC, the young Akio Koo he killed was picked-up from SF (or Berkeley?), too.

Kemper seems so earnest in his prison interviews; I wonder if there’s other murders he’s never admitted to?

Definitely more up his alley than Zodiac’s.

…they may be dealing with one or more ersatz Zodiacs–other psychotics eager to get into the act, or perhaps even other murderers eager to lay their crimes at the real Zodiac’s doorstep. L.A. Times, 1969

Attached is the paragraph from Zodiac where RG tries to connect many unsolved murders to the Zodiac via coincidences with astrological events (Ohlig/Uhlig is included).

Thanks truthandsoul,
I appreciate your hard work in locating these articles on the possible victims in Graysmith’s Book. It would be nice if Graysmith would be willing to share with us how he obtained this information. But, I also wanted to know more about the possible, so thank you!
