DeAngelo might not be a perfect match for MO, but I still think he’s a strong suspect (unless DNA has already been compared). At the time he was studying at Sierra College, about a 20 minute drive away from the Bennallack and Hakari crime scenes.

They have had the DNA for years so I’m sure it would have been in Codis. Given the MO and area of attack I’m positive that it would have been checked.

You’re probably correct. If it was someone else (even Zodiac) then it’s a bizarre coincidence at least.
Goes to show how much easier it was for predators to get away with these crimes back then.
I spent most of yesterday looking up information on both of the the girls and their fiances. Nancy’s fiance could not be found in the city directories for 1968 though 1973, I didn’t check past 1973. I thought that was a bit odd?
I was unable to confirm Judith Ann Hakari as being at the address we were shown. There is no such address in the Sacramento city directory , 1720 Markston way did not show up .
There was 1721 Markston rd ( Not Way) which was a speedy laundry and 1717 a Equipment rental ,1725 Tropical exotic fish store, but not 1720. It gave her parents address and that Judith had lived there before the Fair Oaks apt.
The city directory gave her address as 2500 Fair Oaks Blvd. The Cottage Fair Apartments .
While looking at all of the names who lived in those areas near where the girls lived , I found a few places that were under construction on Arden Way which was closer to Nancy’s apt. Those addresses were 2737 and 3380 Arden Way. As some of you know I believe that Zodiac worked in construction. All but one crime scene had construction going on extremity close, that includes Jackson st Oct 1969. Lake B was the only one I couldn’t find construction work.
We were also told Nancy was a "court reporter", she was a official "Port" reporter according to the city directory. That opens up another can of worms! What if her killer worked at the Sacramento port and Nancy reported him for something that may have gotten him fired? The information about her job is listed in the 1970 city directory. According to the map, they lived three blocks apart not one. on Google it shows 2.4 mi and a 8 min drive? If any of you have time to re-check what I found, please do and let me know if it is correct or not

Do you have any idea exactly what that is? Did she work for the local newspaper reporting on the Port or did she work for the Port itself?

She had recently moved to 1720 Markston Road which is 0.3 miles from NB’s address (please below). I will start a new thread on the information I have on Judith Hakari. Nancy was a Court Reporter for Juvenile court Judge Robert W Cole in Sacramento. From the Cornoners report "Subject is a county employee, who has been assigned to work in the public defenders office and has recently been working in the Juvenile Court." The information I posted was directly from the cornoners report, unfortunately they seem to have spelt his name incorrectly, it was infact Farris Salamy, his address in 1971 seems to be 6601 Fordham Way, Sacramento.
Now for the possible Zodiac connection. Did you know that Kathleens Shepards husbands (Raymond Alvin Schrecongost) Family who she married 1 month before the LB attack was from Sacramento ? To be exact they lived 1 mile away from the Hakari and Bennallack attacks.
Farris N. Salamy, a former Sacramento County public defender who represented some of the capital’s most notorious killers, died Feb. 2 of leukemia, his family said. He was 84.
Mr. Salamy was a local prosecutor for three years before switching sides to join the Public Defender’s Office in 1959. After 25 years as second in command, he was appointed chief public defender in 1989 to lead an office of 68 lawyers and 40 clerical workers and investigators. He personally tried at least 16 death-penalty cases over 34 years and retired in 1993.

I can only go by what I read in the city directory and that was listed as "Nancy M Bennallack reporter official Port reporter", lived at 1830 Bell St. apt 17, phone 927-6242. It sounds to me she would be working at the docks office in Sacramento at some point? I think if she worked for a newspaper, that would have been a story in itself ,about a newspaper reporter being murdered.
I forgot to mention that there was construction at 2251 Fair Oaks Blvd and at 2737. That is very close to where Judith’s apt was at 2500! Underground Construction co. was at 2391 Fair Oaks Blvd. ( About one block away).
Perhaps TF can locate him? I have found a few with his name, they have passed away. Still very odd that he was not listed, unless he didn’t live in the county of Sacramento. like Davis or another near by town?
Remember the message in a bottle by someone claiming to be Zodiac? What if it was dropped into the water at the docks, could it pop up in Stockton, I believe that it could? It was dated 2-2 -73 found 3 months later 5-11-73.
Rosa Vasquez was found murdered on May 29 1973, did Zodiac read about the bottle found and decided to kill in May? Almost on the one yr anniversary of the writing the message in the bottle, Feb 1st 1974 Brenda Merchant was stabbed to death in Marysville Ca. 41 miles from Sacramento. (Just more for us to think about)
Thanks Cragle and Jacob for clearing that up, so now we have a much better motive for her murder! The killer could have been getting revenge for being put in jail by Nancy’s boyfriend? Sorry to hear he has passed away. Thanks again for letting us know what the real truth is.

I think it’s likely that is a missprint and she was a court reporter. The information in the coroner report is very specific and even gives what court she worked at.
You somehow missed my thank you post to Jacob and Cragle? That has been cleared up, with more information.
And no it was not a typo , it was where she worked just before working as a court reporter. That is what was shown as her employment at the time the census was taken in 1970.

I saw it, just didn’t understand it. I get it now though.

OK, cool. It reminds me of the possible Zodiac connection with the Navy or merchant marines. I don’t know if the Navy ever went that far inland but merchant marines might have.

If Bennallack’s killer was Zodiac instead of somebody she knew, then we need to logically consider why she was targeted. It would be a strange, though possible, coincidence if the fiancee of a successful public prosecutor and defender was randomly targeted. We already know Zodiac resented the cops and fixated on anyone trying to catch him.
I wonder if there was an engagement notice in a local paper for Nancy and Farris that the killer could have read?
That is exactly what I thought when I read about her fiance being one of the top criminal prosecuting attorney’s!
I had dated a prosecuting DA in Oakland Ca. for several years and often wondered if that was why I was being targeted by a scary crazy stalker? Most of my boyfriends were in LE,as well as one judge and a well known cop at VPD Buz Gordon.
The motive is certainly there for Nancy’s murder, did LE take that into consideration I wonder?
Jacob’s quote:
I wonder if there was an engagement notice in a local paper for Nancy and Farris that the killer could have read?
If the killer was following Farris , he would have seen them together, even on the the very night she was killed. Killing Farris would have drawn attention to one of the people he put in jail , perhaps recent? By killing Nancy ,would have been a message to Farris that he couldn’t prove. ( Farris had to have thought he could be the reason for her murder.)
It has been a thought that I have had about the Cheri Jo Bates case. Why the cruel letter to her father? Seemed like a revenge killing to me, also someone who was a Narcotics officer had the name "J. Bates"in that area, was he the intended target and not Joseph Bates?
My suspect started targeting my children to get me to stop investigating him. Revenge seems to be common among some killers.
