If anyone has any experience with making public records requests under FERPA, please contact me. I am trying to find information about my POI, who claimed to have attended some educational institutions in the Bay Area in 1968-1969. If I understand the law correctly, "directory information" is not subject to the general rule of privacy found in FERPA. But I don’t want to mess up this request, so I’d like to talk to anybody who has experience.

Thank you.

As an educator, I can tell you that FERPA is as strict as the law protecting private medical information, HIPAA. I doubt very highly you will have much success gaining access to a particular person’s academic information.
