I read (last week, I think) about a man who was seen making nightly visits to the scene of the Stine murder. I believe this occurred in 1980 or 1981. I cannot find a reference to this online again. Does anyone know about this? How many nights did this man show up? Were the police called? Did anyone get a description of him? (Seems unlikely, or that would be used– I guess we must surmise it was too foggy.)

I would appreciate any official documentation of this, if it is available.

Thanks.

I just read an interview with Toschi from 2007, talking about his role as advisor. He said he used to visit the scene every year to refresh his memory, it could well have been him. To be honest there’s probably a handful of investigators both official and otherwise that have regularly visited the crime scenes over the years, I doubt there’s anything to this kind of thing.

This reminded me of Toschi and his visits to W&C as well. As you say, who knows how many others might have done it too? Early amateur investigators in the days before forums?

I don’t know Chief, he’s very smart or very dumb.

Was this person Graysmith, perhaps? His book was published in 1986 but those were the days when you had to write the book, shop for a publisher, get turned down a few times, do a rewrite or two, and then once accepted by a publisher wait for what probably seemed like years for the book to actually see print.

No, this wasn’t Toschi or any investigators. I was also told this by an LAPD detective: the man who visited the scene in 1980 appeared to match Z’s description. I sure wish I had this in writing. Please post it if any of you researchers turn up anything on this.

Thanks!

Very interesting – although do you trust this detective? How would the LAPD know about this visitor? There’s always the chance he is just jerking your chain. ;)

She did not impress me as the kind of person who would do that.
