Here’s Charles Verga’s death record. He was young.
Ophion, have you tried looking for pigeon clubs in the Albany area? I know they race pigeons and there are carrier pigeons, too. Might be able to figure out who the kid was from looking at a member list.
Charles Verga is buried in San Mateo County.

Thanks Seagull. Yeah, the only sites I found that have member lists for Pigeon Clubs in the bay area are more recent. There was a racing team that had an interesting name, but I can’t remember what it is. Looked into the racing team and found nothing of importance.

I’m pretty sure the Charles Verga that passed away in 1941 was not John’s father. I need to start taking more notes on things, but I’m pretty sure he died later on.

Well, it was worth a shot! I haven’t been able to find any articles on Charles Verga. I also looked for Carlos Verga because that is how he is listed at a family tree I found. I wonder why he died so young.

Why do you think it’s not right? The age is good and so is the location.

Those two things you posted, the dates of death are off by 3 days of each other. That was not uncommon for back then though, right? I could swear A was not his middle initial. I might have all of his info wrote down somewhere, but can’t remember.

Just going off of memory. I had all of Verga’s family info somewhere, and it doesn’t seem correct to me, but this is from research done months ago so I might just be having brain farts.

Thanks for posting that. So his father definitely passed away in 1941. Like you said, I wonder what Nellan did after that. Having 3 young children to care for and all, I’d say you are right about her probably moving in with some family. I will see if I can find any siblings for Nellan. Maybe she had a sibling move in to their Albany home and help out.
The house on Evelyn Ave in Albany is only 822 Sq. feet and that is now. It may have been even smaller back in the 40’s. Maybe it was affordable for Nellan and the kids to stay in after Charles died.

Guess I should have looked at older posts. I posted this back in September…
"The parents were listed as living in San Fran. in 1935. The older sister, Charlene Ann Verga, was born in San Fran. on Feb. 24, 1933. Mother’s maiden name was Raffanti. Mother Nellan D. (Reffanti) Verga may have later married a man named Frank L. Senor. I wonder if Charles passed away and Nellan remarried, or maybe they were divorced. Can’t find much on John so far. Maybe he later used his mother’s maiden name or the last name of Senor if his father, Charles, passes away when he was young. This could very well be Charles’ family in the 1920 census… "
Then there was a link which does not work.
I wonder if Nellan did marry this Frank Senor guy, and, if so, when?

Here’s Nellan and her family members from the 1930 census. They were living in San Francisco.
At least 3 siblings. Could have been more born after the census. It’s weird with the Verga family I see John’s father has used the name of Charles as well as Carlo. His grandparents used their Italian names at times as well. I’m pretty sure John’s middle name is Charles. I wonder if he went by that or maybe had an Italian nickname he went by. Either way, there are hardly any records of him. I’m tempted to just call him and ask some questions.

The Frank L. Senor guy married a Nancy D. Raffanti. Could be Nellan.
I don’t have an Ancestry account, but here is the link if anyone wants to check it out… http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse. … seo&ghc=20
Frank is listed living in Clayton, CA (Contra Costa Co.)
