The square hood is more likely an artifact of pattern used. The easiest pattern for sewing such a “hood” resembles a flattened out mailing box, and is sewn together as if making a “box”. I think it is most likely Z used this simplest of patterns to create his hood and hence the look it had.
I get this on good word as my wife is a darn good knitter and seamstress.

I was going to say, there’s a few other pillbox type hats that were common, including the Knights Templar ceremonial hat. The flat top to the hood could be an artefact of its construction as Russ mentions, but a hat underneath would have helped support the material.
