I was reading an article on the Hautz letter thread. It said police believed there was evidence the killer was in her car with her. Does anyone know what said evidence is?
Negative..the books of CJB were still in regular position which is why the police did believe that it had not come to a struggle or something inside the car. As far as I know there was no evidence regarding Z being in CJB’s car. Which Hautz article are you referring to?

The only thing I recall is the possibility of the stranger having been by the car, but not inside. There were some oily smudges on the car but it could not be determined if they had anything to do with the killing.
IIRC Detectives found a greasy palm print on the passenger side front seat.
Possibly from someone feigning an attempt to fix her car by going back and forth from the engine compartment to the drivers
seat to try to start the car.
Although not strictly evidence, Cheri Jo Bates’ Volkswagen Beetle had both windows rolled down, but this, rather than a second occupant, may have been as a result of a stifling hot day, and both windows may have been rolled down by Cheri herself. A newspaper article, whether based in fact, reported this: ""Some of her friends were at the library between 7 and 9 pm, but none can recall seeing Cheri. She had been there, however, because three books stamped that day were found in the front seat of her yellow-green Volkswagen found parked on Terracina, near the annex. Someone else was there too. Someone who police believe knew Cheri- knew her well enough to recognize her car. The distributor had been tampered with and there was evidence that the man had been in the car with her. The keys were still in the ignition when the car was found the next day. Both windows had been rolled down and the right door was ajar."
If the right door was ajar, this could have suggested that somebody may have gained entry to the passenger side of the vehicle at some point in the evening or night. There are several explanations available for this however.
I believe the autopsy showed she had a meal a few hours before her death and it wasn’t something she could have got at home. did they ever figure out where and when she ate? It’s possible she dined with her killer.
She eat at home around 4.30 pm. The stomach contents contained ‘at least 100ml of thick fluid, with particulate food particles in which are easily recognized reasonably large pieces of beef, along with vegetable particulates and/or celery and onion, and what appears to be milk or cottage cheese.’
OK, thanks Richard.

CJB’s killer knew his victim.

You figure that in the process of disabling the vehicle that the killer could have left behind potential evidence…
He did leave the 3 hairs that did not belong to Cheri jo, the wrist watch, the cigarette butt, and the boot-heel prints…
Seems like they actually had a good deal of evidence, as to why they could never use it to catch the killer, who knows.

Cheri jo’s killer said that he knew her:
BUT ONLY ONE THING WAS ON MY MIND. MAKING HER PAY FOR ALL THE BRUSH OFFS THAT SHE HAD GIVEN ME DURING THE YEARS PRIOR -bates killer
Agree..I somehow like the idea that he was aware of what kind of car she drove..

Just a boot heel print? Not enough to establish size of the boot? If so, was that print enough to eliminate it as a possible match for confirmed zodiac crime scenes?
The Department of Justice report described the heel prints at the Cheri Jo Bates crime scene as "those worn by Air Force personnel" and "was identified as a B.F. Goodrich waffle design, men’s four-eighths inch washer type half heel. The B.F Goodrich Products Division of Akron, Ohio, reported that this type heel is only sold to the Federal prison industries at Leavenworth, Kansas. It was subsequently learned that Federal prison industries made low quarter military type shoes and supplied them to all the armed services using black dress shoes. The measurement of the heel indicated that it would have been attached to an eight to ten size shoe. Shoes bearing the same type heel were issued and sold at the PX at March Air Force Base in Riverside."

I made a mistake, there were "4 brown Caucasian head hairs"
Actually they could tell quite a bit from the print. (See attachments)
