This March, 1971 Argosy magazine article delves into the possible connection between the Bates & Zodiac cases. I have had it lost in my shuffle for a while, but found it today after a couple hours of searching at the suggestion of the Foreigner. As far as I can tell, not much that we didnt already know, nor is there a different photo of the desktop poem.

This magazine was released on March 1st 1971, Argosy Vol. 372 #3. The text in the article states, "No connection between the still unsolved slaying of Miss Bates and the Northern California butcheries (about which the weird hide-and-seek killer since has bragged), was established until recently".
The link between the Bates and Zodiac crimes was established, then publicly released in the San Francisco Chronicle on November 16th 1970 by Paul Avery. But how can a magazine article released in a publication dated March 1st 1971 refer to the Zodiac Killer having since bragged of this crime, when the Zodiac Killer didn’t brag about the Bates murder until March 13th 1971? In view of this section being bracketed, did it indicate that the publishers of the magazine did later reprints that month just to accommodate the latest Zodiac letter?

The cover date was always a few months ahead.

Reflecting the confession letter, assuming it was from CJB’s killer:
– he knew her name (‘Miss Bates’)
– he knew she’d go to the library (!) (‘I was waiting for her at the library’)
– she was talking to him (‘about time for what’)
CJB knew her killer, who knew she would go to the library, knew the area (‘library walking’). Had access to the library. He was a student at RCC.
