TF, what was that picture you were talking about? I assume that it was published in a magazine, similar to how the desktop photo was featured. But could it be that it’s not a photo of the original? It made me think about how we compared the Halloween card to the one made for Fincher’s Zodiac, and how sometimes the reproduction was credited as being an original photo.

I assume this is the picture of the confession letter you are refering to.
The picture is to be found in the link added in the original post, and here it is as well:

In this link the yellow copy, aka "the, to most of us, KNOWN version" is pictured and in this photo of the letter there is a number
written in red, in the upper right corner, a case number?: 352-481

Here is the same picture of the letter in a larger version:

Some thoughts regarding the confession letter:

SHE IS NOT THE FIRST AND SHE WILL NOT BE THE LAST

It sounds as if he talks about another woman he had attacked previously. Indeed there was a Mrs. Atwood, 19, who had refused to go on a ride with her attacker. She was

a.) stabbed
b.) with a hunting knife
c.) on a parking lot
d.) at ‘Cutter Pool’ at Riverside College.

and this incident:
A nineteen-year-old University of California at Riverside coed, walking west on Linden, became aware of a car creeping slowly alongside her. Looking around, she observed a man offering her a ride. “No, thanks,” she said. “Well, after all, I’m not Jack the Ripper,” replied the driver. “Don’t you recall? I gave you a ride three weeks ago.” Three weeks ago Cheri Jo had been murdered. The girl smiled, vaguely remembering him, opened the car door, and slid in. The ride went smoothly. He dropped her off at a local pizza parlor. When her boyfriend failed to meet her, she started back toward the UCR library. The same man rolled alongside again and picked her up, but instead of taking her home, drove rapidly up a dark road to Pigeon Pass. “There are a lot of kooks running around,” he said as the car slowed. “You heard about that girl at City College, didn’t you?” Frightened, the girl leaped from the car. Racing along the road’s edge, she fell. “I’m not going to kill you,” he shouted as she scrambled to her feet. “If I wanted to kill you, I could just hit you in the head with this piece of wood.” She returned to the car, but instantly his hands closed around her throat. “Now if I wanted to kill you, I could just snap your neck,” he said. “Shall I kill you now, or are you going to take off your clothes?” As he grabbed her sweatshirt, she wriggled free and bolted into the woods. The stranger gave up searching for her and roared off with her purse and books. Sobbing, covered with scratches and burrs, she staggered to the Highgrove area. When police responded, she described the suspect as “thirty-five, five feet nine inches tall with a chunky, protruding stomach.” Later descriptions of Zodiac mentioned “a slight potbelly” and that his “stomach hung over his trousers.”

In both cases, the attacker offered a ride. I could imagine that Z had referred to Mrs. Atwood as his previous victim. If that is correct, this would give us a good hint regarding the area where Z had moved around during these days. Both were students, one at RCC – as CJB – the other one at University of California, Riverside, which is quite close to Linden street. All this indicates that Z was not at Riverside only for a few days but lived there. The unknown woman even gives us an age estimation, 35yrs, which would go well with Fouke’s observation.

MAYBE SHE WILL BE THE BEAUTIFUL BLOND THAT BABYSITS NEAR THE LITTLE STORE AND WALKS DOWN THE DARK ALLEY EACH EVENING ABOUT SEVEN.

If Z was from the area, e.g. near Linden, then we should ask ourselves the question where that ‘alley’ could have been. In fact Z had used the term ‘alley’ twice. Besides the fact that he had watched the ‘blond’ each evening about seven, such alley must have been present in his thoughts somehow. And yes, he even knew what the blond girl had done ‘near the little store’. Babysitting.

OR MAYBE SHE WILL BE THE SHAPELY BLUE EYED BROWNETT THAT SAID NO WHEN I ASKED HER FOR A DATE IN HIGH SCHOOL.

If Z had asked her for a date ‘in high school’, it sounds a little bit as if he didn’t go there anymore.

BUT MAYBE IT WILL NOT BE EITHER. BUT I SHALL CUT OFF HER FEMALE PARTS AND DEPOSIT THEM FOR THE WHOLE CITY TO SEE.

For the whole city to see? Three attacks, all in Riverside. The confession letter being sent from Riverside. The letters addressed to the Enterprise and the local police plus Mr. Bates. The author definitely meant the local area, most likely Riverside, his hometown.

SO DON’T MAKE IT TO EASY FOR ME. KEEP YOUR SISTERS, DAUGHTERS, AND WIVES OFF THE STREETS AND ALLEYS.

‘Alley’ #1

MISS BATES WAS STUPID. SHE WENT TO THE SLAUGHTER LIKE A LAMB.

Z did know the name of his victim. So he knew her name and the address of her father. Latter implies that he had lived in the direct surrounding of Mr. Bates or was directly connected to the Bates family (or both). Otherwise he would not have known "Cheri Jo’s" last name at all, wouldn’t he?

I TOLD HER THAT MY CAR WAS DOWN THE STREET AND THAT I WOULD GIVE HER A LIFT HOME.

Presumably already knowing the direction..

I GRABBED HER AROUND THE NECK WITH MY HAND OVER HER MOUTH AND MY OTHER HAND WITH A SMALL KNIFE AT HER THROAT.

The small knife is one of the details, such as the distributor wires, only her killer would have known.

MAKING HER PAY FOR THE BRUSH OFFS THAT SHE HAD GIVEN ME DURING THE YEARS PRIOR.

Again as if he had wished a closer relationship to her over years.

THIS LETTER SHOULD BE PUBLISHED FOR ALL TO READ IT. IT JUST MIGHT SAVE THAT GIRL IN THE ALLEY. BUT THAT’S UP TO
YOU.

‘Alley’ #2

As far as I know, at least some of the letters had been sent from a ‘rural’ area of Riverside. At that time, this could have been the Linden Street area, which is still sort of ‘rural’ today. There are also smaller hills, which is a good match to the ‘walking down’ blond babysitter.

At the time of this incident, my "POI" lived in an apartment complex a block off of W. Linden. However, he was in his early twenties, not thirty-five. He did, however, attend Ramona High while Cheri was a freshman there; and, he married, in September, 1966, a young lady who lived literally around the corner from Cheri. All of which means he undoubtedly was acquainted with Cheri. Perhaps–and this is only speculation–he made a pass at Cheri, and she refused (she was known for having "a sharp tongue") and threatened to tell his fiancee.

This is an interesting post..that would be a good motive for such a wrongful acting. If you don’t mind, I’d like to ask some questions regarding your suspect?

– What was the hair color of your suspect?
– Did he wear heavy-rimmed glasses, at least sometimes?
– Was he into airplane model stuff, cryptology or writing/drawing activities?
– Can you place him to the Northern Bay area?
– Are there handwriting examples or relatives to ask them for?
– How ‘protruding’ was his belly, how round his face?
– If there is a name/yearbook picture looking similar to him, that would be fine.

Thanks

QT: here’s the info you requested re my "POI":
1. Hair color: Blond
2. Glasses: No photos showing him wearing glasses.
3. Writing/Drawing Activities: Degree in Graphic Design.
4. Northern Bay Area: 1968-1969, moved from Riverside to San Jose, CA.
5. Handwriting: Signature on wedding license available.
6. "Protruding" Belly: Unknown; however, played varsity football at Ramona High, so was probably muscular. Wedding photo indicates he was average height, perhaps 5’8".
7. Round Face: Wedding photo shows him with an "average"-shaped face, and a prominent jaw/chin.
8. Name/Yearbook Photo: Available, I believe, in z-site’s Super-Duper Secret Section. His initials are/were RH.
Additional Info: Before her marriage to RH in September, 1966, his wife was a Librarian Assistant at Riverside Community College.

Hm…the only blond man I know about is the man seen with Donna Lass..most others have described him as light brown, reddish brown or simply as brown haired. The San Jose connection together with Linden and Ramona High is indeed interesting. Do you know where to find the signature please, thanks? Maybe there is at least some similarity in how he had written the letters..

Bumping for recent discussion on if the Bates killer was likely the Riverside writer and if that writer was likely Zodiac. That issue is discussed on the first 2 pages of this thread.

"The person who wrote the confession letter is aware of facts about the homicide that only the killer would know. There is no doubt that the person who wrote the confessino letter is our homicide suspect."

I FIRST PULLED THE MIDDLE WIRE FROM THE DISTRIBUTOR.

Latter was not mentioned in the article..it is a quite precise detail, fact, only her perp could have known.
