[1] The ‘Inside Detective’ Magazine stated ‘Detectives interrogated four young men who said they had seen Cheri Jo near her car the previous night.’

[2] Walter Siebert of 3667 Gloreen Court, who attended the library that evening, stated that ‘he and a few friends were in the library from 7.15 pm until 9, but did not see Miss Bates, whom they all knew’. They said they saw four men dressed in work clothes sitting on a fence across from the spot where Miss Bates’ car was found, but they did not know them.’

Cheri Jo Bates arrived at Terracina Drive circa 6.15 pm. The four workmen were present, sitting on the fence opposite her Volkswagen Beetle likely from 6.15 pm to 7.15 pm. They never mentioned to police, when interrogated, any second person accompanying Cheri Jo Bates, or anybody tampering with her vehicle. They were there until at least 7.15 pm and heard no commotion or screams, despite her body being discovered only 100 feet from the vehicle. This suggests the murder and more importantly the disabling of her Volkswagen Beetle occurred after 7.15 pm, completely throwing the timeline out, and questioning the validity of the order of events detailed in the Confession letter.

I think we need to remember that daylight savings time ended at 2AM on the Sunday that Cheri was killed. Most likely the school had changed their clocks, but maybe not as that is something maintenance probably took care of. We don’t know if they worked on a Sunday. This one little thing is enough to throw the timeline off.

The key point is that the four young men spotted Cheri Jo by her car, when she arrived at 6.10-6.15 pm. Walter Siebert & Co spotted the four young men at 7.15 pm sitting opposite of where her car was ultimately found, but did’n’t see Cheri Jo. The clocks went back on Sunday, but it’s not likely Walter Siebert and all his friends collectively got the time wrong. This puts the men on the Terracina for at least one hour, and none of them mention an unknown male talking or tampering with her vehicle. In fact they mention nothing suspicious whatsoever. Whether they saw Cheri exiting her vehicle to head to the library, or returning from the library is not the issue, the idea portrayed in the Confession letter that the assailant disabled the vehicle while she was in the library is untrue. I doubt Walter Siebert and company all met up on Sunday to head to the library had they all got the time wrong. The Mexican-American student stated ‘he knew Cheri Jo Bates and had noticed her in the library the night in question. He said he saw the girl "writing something with a ball point pen" in her blue spiral school notebook." The boy told us he was outside about 5.30 pm, waiting for the library to open at 6, and it was then he saw the girl.’
He therefore must have seen Cheri Jo in the library shortly after 6.00 pm, which corroborates the four young men’s sighting, but he nor the young men described anyone lurking in or around the library, and more crucially an assailant with the bonnet of Cheri Jo Bates vehicle up, tampering with her vehicle. The men saw Cheri when she parked up at 6.15 pm. They were still there at 7.15 pm. In that hour they reported nothing to police.

That is an interesting point, but it leaves the question as to when it was disabled…which it obviously was. She wasn’t in the library long. If she left and went somewhere with her killer and he didn’t disable her car until after 7:15, when the workmen were gone, then he would have had to do it in front of her, which makes no sense. It’s early for me yet, so maybe I’m missing something. :)

I also have to wonder what in the heck four workmen were doing hanging around on a fence for an hour at 6:15 pm on a Sunday.

I did a follow up Tahoe. I cannot prove any of it as there are so many variables. But I have highlighted two options. But many questions remain. I even read that the right door of the Volkswagen may have been slightly ajar and possible evidence somebody may have entered the vehicle. This is one idea.

I tend to discount these 4 guys, if they just sat on a fence for an hour. Wouldn’t be criminal genius to murder somebody, then sit back down on the fence again. Then again somebody involved in the regeneration of the buildings such as a painter/decorator cannot be ruled out.

This time change has always made me wonder if somebody or multiple people were off with their times due to the time change. Good research and worth considering
