This thread is for people that believe that Zodiac authored some or all of the Bates case letters, desktop etc. I ask that this be a PRO-RIVERSIDE thread. We have debated countless times whether the writing in the Bates case is the work of Zodiac, and we have lots of threads to do that in. I ask that people that are PRO-RIVERSIDE WRITING CONNECTION ONLY post here to compare all the clues in the Bates case letters and desktop, and let’s make a full list of things that stand out to us. As possibly being connected to Zodiac.

Some here think the Riverside stuff is not the work of Zodiac, and I respect your opinions, but ask that this thread remain a Pro-Riverside connection thread for those of us that think there is a Z connection to work on the letters and desktop together. Thanks

I read somewhere that the use of "shall" when most Americans would use "will" is common to Brits, as is "Happy Christmas" (used by Z in another message). Where’s UK Spycatcher when you need him–or is it her? (No offense intended UK, but your icon is, well, ambivalent).

SHALL is not commonly used in the USA. Not many people ever use that word when talking in a normal conversation. Where do we find that word use a lot? In legal papers, insurance, real estate, lawyers, etc. The other place we see it is in literature, plays, books, etc

I see literature being a possibility. I always thought "lone people in the night* was a bit poetic.

In the spirit of a Pro-Riverside list, I’ll call out the obvious: Zodiac took credit for CJB’s murder in his affirmation by letter about this "Riverside activity." This amounts to a confession — whether we believe Z did it, or was just prone to exaggeration.

Good point. He took months to respond to it rather than capitalize on the Riverside link when it was fresh in the news. Why?

Because of the RCC desktop poem, signed with his initials: RH. He didn’t want to be associated with Cheri Bates’ murder for that very reason. So, he kept mum until his cover, so to speak, was blown

It may have been initials, maybe not, either way,I think he was nervous about the connection being made

The simple act of writing about his crimes is important. It is his mindset. The need to be heard and, most importantly, recognized. The Zodiac was no different.

Both killers had the press in mind:

Riverside killer wrote the Daily Enterprise. The Zodiac wrote the Vallejo Times Herald, the Chronicle, the Examiner and, the Los Angeles Times.

Both wanted the city to see everything they wrote:

Riverside killer stated "this letter should be published for all to read it" and the Zodiac stated "I want you to print this cipher on the frunt page of your paper" (7/69), "PS could you print this new cipher on your frunt page" (11/69), "must print in paper" (11/9/69), "tell everyone about the bus bomb with all the details" (4/28/70), "the reason that I’m writing to the Times is this, they don’t bury me on the back pages like some of the others" (3/71), and "PS if I do not see this note to in your paper i will do something nasty which you know I am capable of doing" (1/74). There are a couple of others but then you have to speculate as to whether or not he was the author.

Both killers described their acts of killing:

Riverside killer in his statement about the events that led up to killing Cheri (ddisabled car, waited for her in library, followed her out and offered to help) and in his statement of the act itself "I plunged the knife into her and it broke. I then ffinished the job by cutting her throat". The Zodiacs statement of the act itself was " when i fired the first shot at his head, he leaped backwards, at the same time thus spoiling my aim. He ended up on the back seat then the floor in back thrashing very violently with his legs; that’s how I shot him in the knee" and further tells us about how he left the scene after the attack "no squealing tires + racing engine, drove away quite slowly so as not to draw attention to his car).

Both killers alluded to more victims:

Riverside killer in his statement " she is not the first and she will not be the last" and the Zodiac and n his seemingly never ending count of 37+ and his mention of "my Riverside activity".

Both killers used circled dots on the letter " I":

Riverside killer used his on the confession letter envelope. The Zodiac used his on the Los Angeles Times envelope for 3/71.

Both killers use double postage.

Both killers abbreviate California on the envelope to Calif and both do so without the abbreviated period.

In addition, the Riverside killer spoke of "sisters, daughters, wives" in that order. He also talked of being brushed off by Cheri. He is giving the indication of being a young man. The initial reports of the Zodiacs age was around 25 ( don’t recall off hand the exact statements). This age, given the length of time between Riverside and the Zodiacs crimes, would seem to fit a person that may have been about 4 years older than Cheri. 25 in 1969. 22 in 1966. This would imply that he may not have been in high school with her unless he failed a few grades.

All good points Soze.

If the Zodiac was say, a year older than Cheri, or from her age group, he would have been 18-19 in 1966 at the time of Cheri’s murder, and at the time of Lake B Zodiac attack, would have been 21-22, which matches Hartnell saying that Z sounded like a student, and Officer Slaight said Z sounded to be in his 20’s. I know you can not go by voice alone, but worth considering. Also of interest, right around the time of the Kathleen Johns incident, there was a Vallejo man "about 22" (as per Graysmith’s book)who was pulled over by Cops in Santa Rosa after he had been flashing his headlights at Female drivers and attempting to get them to pull over. He was let go by police. I would love to know who that Guy was.

You and I discussed something of this "flashing lights" or other attempts to pull people over about 4 years ago. I remember Wyoming and a city beginning with Pine. Do you recall?

Vaguely, I know there was a pattern of similar incidents going on in the state of KS in the 70’s
