This spot is for discussion of the classified ad that ran in the Vallejo Time Herald, about 7-10 days before the murder of Betty Lou Jensen.
I hope that if anybody gets a copy of the AD, they will post it here. This ad was first mentioned by Lyndon Lafferty in his book. The timing, only a week or so before a girl named BETTY LOU was killed in the same town where the AD ran, is certainly interesting, and is generating some talk on the various forums. The phone# associated with the AD is: 916-925-7339 . The general consenus is that it was a phone# for Sacramento. The ad supposedly ran as follows:
BETTY LOU–PLEASE LET ME HELP YOU. CALL ME COLLECT ANYTIME AFTER 6:00 PM OR ON WEEKENDS. 916 925-7339
JANET WHITE
Again,certainly interesting.
I hope it will generate some discussion, and I will start it off. In about a week or so, I WILL determine if such a phone# existed in Sacramento, and if so, the name of the person that was actually associated with that phone#. In the meantime, I found one person that has been associated with that phone# previously(not currently). I know he used it in the past, but dont know when, so I am not accusing this guy of anything,I just thought his last name, and a couple other factoids were interesting. Since the man is dead,I will put it out there, and if anybody thinks he is interesting, then maybe we can dig more.
Harry Zelazny
March 30, 1947 — May 19, 2003
Harry D. Zelazny of Copperopolis died Monday at a Sonora hospital of natural causes. He was 56.
He was raised in San Luis Obispo and was a 1965 graduate of Mission High School. In high school, he played football, baseball and also raced quarter midget cars. Later he attended St. Mary’s College in Moraga. He lived in Sonora and Tuolumne for 24 years before moving to Copperopolis, where he lived for one year.
Mr. Zelazny was a fire captain for the California Department of Forestry at the Sierra Conservation Center for 24 years before retiring in 1993. He served in the Army during Vietnam and received a purple heart. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Twain Harte chapter of the American Legion, and the Mountain Springs Men’s Club. He enjoyed golf and traveling.
He was married to ** ** Zelazny for 19 years.
He is survived by a sister, ** of San Jose; a brother, of San Luis Obispo; an aunt, of San Francisco; three cousins, of Foster City, of Placerville, and of Elgin, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and .
Donations can be made to the American Heart Association, 1710 Gilbreth Road, Burlingame, 94010.
A visitation is scheduled from 5-7 tonight at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. tomorrow at the funeral home. A burial is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at San Luis Obispo Cemetery. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Again, this guy probably has nothing to do with that personal ad or the Zodiac murders, but he WAS associated with that phone# in the past. His obituary states that he retired in 1993 after 24 years with the Dept of Forestry, which means, thats what he started doing in 1969.
Its ironic that he was a firefighter, yet his house went up in flames as seen in the 7/5/78 Modesto Bee:

So Robert Graysmith never heard about this very interesting classified ad that everyone in Vallejo must have been talking about? Seems like LE would have checked it out pronto. Or maybe they did and decided it wasn’t about BL Jensen or wasn’t relevant, but now people are reconsidering? Very intriguing, Morf!

haha….good age, but I probably prefered 37!
One also has to wonder if she at age 16 read the paper. Why would this person need to contact "Betty Lou’ in this way? Whoever it was…it’s bizarre. And thanks to this ad, people publicly now knew Betty Lou needed help! Gee…thanks Ms. White!!
Man, if I was 27 I’d go play football, guzzle some beer and howl at the moon ’til morning. As it stands I’ll play on the computer, have some soup and hope to wake up in the morning.
Anyway, just because someone’s middle name is Lou doesn’t mean they use it. Probly less than more. Betty Rubble was really Betty Jean Rubble but Fred, Barn and I just called her Betty. Maybe they use it more when younger and drop it later.
I can think of some things a 16 year old might not confide in anyone about, family, friends, even within the home town. Pregnancy, weight loss, VD… None which sound like BLJ though. And yes, how many 16 year olds read the newspaper? Unless she answered some newspaper ad. Better look at those old VTHs again…

There was an article in an Oct. 1968 San Mateo Times about an 18 year old guy, Michael Singleton, who had been arrested for the hit and run death of a 5 year old girl. He committed suicide and was found by his landlady Janet White. I tried to find if maybe Singleton’s mother could have lived in the Vallejo area and perhaps Janet White was trying to get a hold of her but turns out that Singleton was from Minnesota.
I also tried to see if maybe there was a Janet White who may have been in either the Pythian Sunshine Girls or Rainbow Girls with Betty Lou. Maybe this Janet White belonged to a Sacramento chapter of one of those groups and wanted to contact Betty Lou, but I didn’t have any luck finding a roster for 1968.
Kind of falls under the catagory of BFD! but still looking.

Surely it’s been mentioned, but it’s likely not to do directly with Janet White’s profession, therefore the after hours and weekend (home) phone number. Also the size of the font and capitalization probably costed a bit more, making the intention seem serious.
The AA ad above it made me think of Grant, and if the search for connections to him turned up the BL ad.
The Frank Davis ad below made me think of me…

Typically AA ads run in the personals section of all newspapers. It makes it easier for someone who needs to go to a meeting and is not familar with the area to find where a suitable meeting will be held.

I wasn’t implying there was any SPECIAL ORDER to the ads, or any connection between the two, such as the same person putting them in on the same day and one ending up above or below the other. The bit I know about the investigation had LL following Grant around to AA meetings and what not. How did LL know where and when AA meetings were held? Maybe by looking in the paper, maybe not. I probably would have. Of course this ad was long before there was even a Zodiac suspect, but again if I were LL looking at the whereabouts of Grant at the time of LHR, for example, I probably would have gone back and seen if there were any AA meetings with LHR in the path of it and Grant’s home.
Now quit bullying me, I have to go weed whack. Spring is springing.

Yeah, it’s always nice when we get a new bone to chew, particularly one with no POI attached to it. This one of course implies some pre-meditation, pre-planning or pre-existing condition, I have no idea which. I do favor the idea of it being the first Z crime, NorCal anyway, as opposed to trying to understand why he would kill unknowns first and then people he knew, though that too is certainly possible. And that’s again implying that he knew any of the victims, which his letters seem to give no indication of (NorCal).
It sure would be something if an all but ignored ad in the paper a week prior to the first crime (NorCal) led to a solid lead after all these years. I’m not holding my breath, but if someone is trying to find out what this is all about I’m all for it.

Well, in those days there weren’t any Lexuses, Accuras or even Kias. Sure, there was the occasional Benz or Datsun but a "foreign car’ was a VW Bug. Cheviys, Fords and Dodges ruled the road and gas stations attendants washed your windows, checked your oil, the air in your tires and gave you green stamps with a fill up. I did it, with my corny Chevron cap on my head.

Obtained additional information from Lyndon Lafferty, by Sandy & Zamantha*
– A long typewritten letter was sent to "All the police departments involved in the Zodiac case" in 1983.
– It was signed by a Linda O’Mara, "Free Lance Investigative Journalist"
– Part of the letter said: Are you aware that the following AD appeared in the Vallejo Times Herald prior to
Betty Lou Jensen being killed.
– Jerry Johnson was always at the police department & was given a copy of this letter in 1994.
– Lyndon and Jerry Johnson could not locate Linda O’Mara but a great deal of time was not devoted to find
her. Furthermore, her name never surfaced again in the course of the continued investigation.
– In any investigation time constraints determine priority leads and evidentiary value is a principal factor in
the equation.

If the 1983 letter was written by a free lance investigative journalist to all the LE departments in regards to the Zodiac murders there was, no doubt, some sort of reply address for the various departments to respond. She was after all looking for a story.
Apparently the VTH ad was important enough for Lafferty to include in his book but anything the journalist might have uncovered relating to Janet White, why she placed the ad and if it was directed at Betty Lou Jensen was not that important!?!?!

How did LL know where and when AA meetings were held? Maybe by looking in the paper, maybe not.
There is an AA members handbook for different areas. The handbook contains information about every meeting in the area. Where it is, what days and times it’s held at and what type of meeting it is and provide at least two contacts for each meeting along with telephone numbers (if available) should you require any more information.

Here is Tracers post from zk.com
Here is some information about Janet White from the 1968-1969 edition of the Who’s Who of American Women
It looks like Janet White was working at the Vacaville prison in 1968 when the ad was placed. I tend to think that the ad was directed towards the wife or girlfriend of a prisoner, someone Janet White had had contact with but for whatever reason did not have contact information.
I do not know of any connection that Betty Lou Jensen would have had with anyone at the prison in Vacaville.
morf13, Subject: Re: The "BETTY LOU" classified ad Sat Apr 28, 2012 11:04 am
Thanks for posting Seagull.
Some good points, and on the surface, doesnt seem like Janet White would have any connection to a high school girl like BLJ. On the other hand, would a woman working at a prison, and dealing with prisoners, etc, plaster her name & ph# in the newspaper for the whole world to see? I have a few customers that work for a local prison, and they all choose .to have unpublished ph#’s…just in case some prisoner has a ‘beef’ with them. I am actually surprised that Janet’s ph# was listed in the phonebook.
I wish Janet was alive to clear this up. Imagine if you ‘are’ somebody that has a beef or issue with her, etc, and you place that ad in the paper. Imagine the confusion if Janet gets a call from various ‘Betty Lou’s’ calling her. We have seen zyncronicity many times before in this case, but the fact that Betty Lou ad ran 7-10 days before the murder, thats awfully weird.
I would like to know if there were any other similar ads in local papers just before the murders of any other Z victims….now that would be crazy

There is more than one way to lose your life to a killer

– A long typewritten letter was sent to "All the police departments involved in the Zodiac case" in 1983.
– It was signed by a Linda O’Mara, "Free Lance Investigative Journalist"
– Part of the letter said: Are you aware that the following AD appeared in the Vallejo Times Herald prior to
Betty Lou Jensen being killed.– Jerry Johnson was always at the police department & was given a copy of this letter in 1994.
– Lyndon and Jerry Johnson could not locate Linda O’Mara but a great deal of time was not devoted to find
her. Furthermore, her name never surfaced again in the course of the continued investigation.– In any investigation time constraints determine priority leads and evidentiary value is a principal factor in
the equation.
I found this classified ad in very many issues of the SF Examiner from 1983:
The same woman is named in Zamantha’s post above. I wonder what that Vallejo ad she was referring to was.
Here’s the same woman looking for a cryptographer to "check code work":
As far as I know this is NEW information. Why should a Linda O’Mara ask for Z info? Her name might be a real one as there wouldn’t be any other possibility to get in contact. Anything about her? And to whom she might be connected, if at all?
Found one Linda O’Mara @ Jurupa Valley CA next to Riverside.

Found one Linda O’Mara @ Jurupa Valley CA next to Riverside..however, there are some people with that name and in the second ad she gives a po box in sosf, South San Francisco.
My first guess reading those ads is that she may had received a code letter or postcard? Why else would she ask for help solving a cipher / in the Z killer case?
SoSF is a rather small area between to Daly City and San Mateo.
– The Exorcist letter was thougth to be sent from San Mateo
– "On or around January 12, 1974, a caller claiming to be "Zodiac" says a body will be found in a church. Apparently this was in reference to Daly City and/or San Mateo County." (some article, can’t remember which one, also don’t know which killing the call should ‘apparently’ refer to)

My hunch is she is an amateur sleuth who thinks she solved the case, and came up with a solution to the ciphers, as many other amateur sleuths have. They are convinced they are right but their frequent attempts to contact law enforcement are ignored. So she began appealing to the public with the classified ads.
Wow I have only just seen this, more possible “coded” advertisements in the papers, they seen to crop up in this case quite a bit
JANE WHITE WAS A THERAPIST AT VACAVILLE MED FACILITY ALSO CALLED CALIFORNIA MEDICAL FACILITY IN VACAVILLE
Tracers posted this April 24, 2012 on Zodiackiller.com:

The phone number 916-925-7339 WAS a working phone number in 1968. It was listed to an Allen S. White
who resided at 2611 Norbert Way in N. Sacramento. He did indeed have a wife named Janet who,
records indicate, was born on August 4, 1925. Sadly, she passed away February 12, 1988.
I then today found that Janet White was a therapist at Vacaville Med Facility :

Vacaville Med Facility , correct name California Medical Facility in Vacaville,
was located in Vacaville, probably, as today, at 1600 California Dr., Vacaville, CA 95696
