Forgive me if this has been answered elsewhere, but while much has been made of how sleepy and lonely Lake Herman Road is, when I was in the Bay Area last fall I noticed it had its own exit on the 101 heading from Napa toward San Francisco. Can anyone tell me if this exit existed in 1968? If so, it would mean we’re not necessarily looking for a Vallejo/Benicia local.

Hmmm….Not sure what HWY you are thinking of as Lake Herman Road ends at Columbus PKWY on one side and 680 on the other. 680 was there and where Stella Borges headed after she saw David and Betty Lou.
Lake Herman Road, even now (off 680) is a country-type road (as you know). You really wouldn’t expect to find people there hanging out. Back then, it was supposedly known as a hang-out spot. I think he knew that because it doesn’t seem like a road one would randomly turn on. Maybe not a local, but someone who used to be…or was very familiar with the area, imo.

Perhaps that was the highway. I just remember being surprised that there was an exit for Lake Herman Road.
