Thanks Seagull. I wonder what caused him to drift onto the other side of the freeway.

It’s hard to say for sure. It was ruled an accident but his sister told me that he had epilepsy. The epilepsy apparently resulted from an accident he was in as a teen but it was supposedly under control with medication. We don’t have an autopsy report so we don’t know if he was taking the medicine. He did have bouts of depression so suicide is a possibility. Also, his car could have malfunctioned, steering, brakes or something else.

He did not die right away. The accident was at 8:20 pm on August 24th and he died about 5 hours later on the 25th.

The bus bomb letter did state that he would not announce his killings anymore and there may be "a few fake accidents." I wonder if Manalli was one of those fake accidents.

I know the death certificate does not have this info, but does anyone (and by that I mean Seagull :) ) know how much Manalli weighed at the time of his death? I think some people dismiss him as a good Z suspect because every pic posted of him he looks thin, but in Graysmith’s book, Manalli is described as "a heavyset male school teacher."

In One of his letters, he writes that "i have put on a lot of weight". Fred is in my top 5 Suspects, despite not looking like the descriptions of Z, simply based on the uncanny subject matter he writes about, his choice of words, writing habits, etc.

Fred was estranged from his family at the time of his death. His parents and sister were in Illinois and did not go to California when he died. Fred’s ex-wife and Don Emblen, the people who would have known what his weight was are both dead now. I don’t know of anyone else to ask.

Thanks for the replies. I still think Manalli was the partner, but I do wonder if he did any of the murders as well. I think he either did the Santa Rosa murders or was at least present while someone else (Zodiac) did them.
