Almost positive that my friend Scott was the one that wrote that review, but I’ll ask him to make sure. I have been pretty busy but have stopped by two libraries in my area and they have not heard of the book or of Manalli.

Only way to get that book is by going directly to that library or requesting your reference dept at your local library does a loan of it from Berkeley

I got a friend in that area that said he will try to drop by the library, so hopefully he does.

What I gather by looking at this is the book is only available at the one library and you cannot check it out, such as you can’t checkout a reference book. I think you probably have to read it there. Though you may be able to have it sent to another library near you depending on whether or not it’s a library that they approve.
Sometimes you can get a library to copy the material and mail it to you for a fee. Here’s some info on that library’s site about their on site and off site copying services:

I’ve used interlibrary loan (for a fee) several times in the past to look at microfilm of The Albany Knickerbocker News.
Manalli’s name is on this link as well

Department of Special Collections- Olin Library in St. Louis, MO. It doesn’t mention anything really, but maybe this library has one of Manalli’s books?

The Bancref library e-mailed me back today.
"Dear Ophion,
Due to copyright restrictions we will be unable to photocopy The great gray mother… in its entirety. I Google searched and could find no online version.
Your only option to read the entire book is to make a visit to the Bancroft Library."
BOO!!!!

I think we should compile a list of Manalli’s published work and out them in order by date. That way people can keep an eye out for them. We have "The Great Gray Mother: A Story of the Life in Prison and Out of it" from 1975. I’m not exactly sure of the other titles or dates, so if someone else can post other known books I would appreciate it.
Manalli has a 1973 book that is supposedly located in a library in St. Louis. I e-mailed the library hoping to learn more. Could be a book we have already heard about and/or discussed, or perhaps it is another book we know nothing about.

I got an email back from a woman at this library, and she is going to be sending me a copy of "Paradise, it’s a Nice Place" magazine article as well as correspondence Manalli had with two people; Mona Van Duyn and Jarvis Thurston, both now deceased. Van Duyn was an award winning poet and Thurston was an English professor. The two were married.
“Jarvis supported, published and sustained many promising young writers and was part of a generation of Western historians and writers that included Bernard DeVoto and Wallace Stegner,” said Fields. “He loved literature and with his wife, Mona Van Duyn, played a key role in expanding the University Libraries’ Modern Literature Collection.”

It would be nice if it was handwritten correspondence.
I had my library try to get this latest Manalli book via inter-library loan, but was told the book could not be located

You mean "The Great Gray Mother?" The UC Berkeley library told me that someone would have to actually go to the library to read it. It can’t be checked out or shipped anywhere. The ex-Minutemen member I have been talking to was in San Quentin for a period of time, but said Manalli’s name did not sound familiar.
The correspondence letters from Manalli from the library in St. Louis are most likely typed and I doubt they would have any good clews in them since he was talking to people that he probably looked up to and/or admired. Unless maybe he knew them on a personal level, but I wouldn’t think he did.
