"Perspective"

Hardcover Perspective book hardback free download also pdf or epub format. this is author by and with isbn code is OTHER STANFORD:36105126990055 this is half about details … for the next several years he will be occupied doing a new translation of
Proust’s Remembrance of Things Past. F. S. Manalli lives in Santa Rosa,
California. He has published stories, poems, and reviews in Literary Review,
MSS, and Outlet. and this is publisher by

Not sure what this is, but might be interesting as well. It’s on that same link as posted above.

I don’t think the Proust stuff relates to Fred M – seems like the search results are a bit of a mess. And the site is clearly very dodgy. I doubt that nearly ten thousand people have downloaded Fred’s book!

Did a bit of searching earlier today, BTW – came up with nothing. Part of the problem is that Fred is now – at least in a Google sense – far more famous as a Z suspect than he ever was as a writer, which means that most of the stuff which pops up is tail-biting, so to speak.

Anway, TGGM is not easily available, that much is clear. I haven’t found it anywhere – either for purchase or loan. And the site above looks pretty much bogus – I doubt they even offer a copy of the book if you’re crazy enough to give them your credit card info.

Now, one possibility is to do a search of university library data bases – but this is easier said than done. I will look further into it and report back if I find anything.

Unfortunately, Norse, I think what you will find is if a college library has the book, they will not lend it out to another library, nor will they let someone check it out. It will be the kind of book, like a reference book, that needs to be read in the library. I suspect the library most likely to have it would be the library at Santa Rosa Junior College. That’s why I suggested to Ophion that Don Emblen’s widow be contacted.

Anybody in the area that could stop in and have a look at the book, assuming it’s there?

Yep – that is indeed the problem. However, I have managed to – sort of – bypass this on occasion, having connections here and there: If you’re an academic on the payroll of a university, things become much easier.

The SRJC library could be worth a shot even if the widow can’t help. You’d think they at least had a copy back when the book was published – and may still have one.

Problem is – again – that if the book is in storage (rather than being in the library, i.e. available as such) it might conceivably take some effort to get one’s hand on it. But that’s a bridge which can be crossed if and when – if they do have a copy.

Thanks Seagull.

Norse, if you type "Fred Manalli" into google then all the top hits will be Zodiac related. From time to time I type in "author F.S. Manalli" and every once in a while something new shows up. There are a few links to libraries that have letters written by Manalli to others. I think most of these letters have been viewed by people on here, and some of the writing has been posted.

Sorry, I’m not exactly sure what people do and/or do not have for Manalli writings. Can someone help me make a checklist?

Things we may or may not have already:
Stanley Elkin papers. -1973 available from the Olin Library.
http://library.wustl.edu/units/spec/man … SS039.html

Mona Van Duyn and Jarvis Thurston correspondence letters, which are also available from the Olin library.
http://library.wustl.edu/units/spec/man … SS039.html

Paul Revere Reynolds papers located at Columbia University Library in NYC. I just e-mailed them about obtaining copies.
http://findingaids.cul.columbia.edu/ead … 9583/dsc/2

Loon No. 5 has something written by Manalli. A story he contributed I imagine. -1975
http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDet … emblen+eds

Things we definitely do not have:
"The Great Gray Mother: A Story of the Life in Prison and Out of it" -1975. I want to read this really bad just because of the interesting title.

Things that we do have and are posted on the site already:
"Strategic Withdrawl" -1969. A story by Manalli published in a book called The Literary Review.

"Paradise, it’s a Nice Place" -1970??? A story by Manalli published in Perspective Magazine.

Daniel Curley correspondence papers. -Year unknown?

"Blaketia Sextet" can’t remember what this is exactly, but I know it is posted here already.

Ophion I have the Loon #5 and another one, too. They are poems, iirc. I posted them on the old forum. I’m not sure where I stuck the two issues of Loon that I have. I looked for them once to no avail but I will look again.

Thanks Seagull. I was thinking of purchasing a copy at some point.

I am not at all surprised that you have this already :)

The papers at Columbia in the Paul Revere Reynolds collection might be worth while. Reynolds was a literary agent.

http://www.nytimes.com/1988/06/11/obitu … at-83.html

Some of Manalli’s unpublished work might be included if Manalli had him for an agent. We know that he had a literary agent who was not able to get him published so it’s possible he could have had another one before or maybe after the one Morf was able to get papers. The other agent was a woman with the last name of Levine.

It’s also possible that Manalli submitted the same body of work to both agents because as far as we know he had very little published. Loon magazine was published by Don Emblen and Iona Press was Emblen’s, too. It seems as if Emblen may have published him out of sympathy.

Hmmm interesting. I tried contacting Iona Press about something last summer, but I can’t remember what it was in regards to. Most likely something Manalli related.

EDIT: Nevermind. Iona Press published "The Great Gray Mother" (like you said earlier) and that is why I tried to contact them… I just found a copy of Louise Thoresen’s book on ebay for $25. SWEET!!!

Were you able to make contact with anyone at Iona Press? Emblen died in 2009, I assume his widow would have the rights to the publishing company now.

EDIT: Excellent deal on the Thoresen book. :D

Yeah it’s the first time I have seen that book for under $50… Iona Press has a facebook page which has a link to some other company called Oghma Creative Media. That is actually who I e-mailed, but never got a reply. This was probably 9-10 months ago. I’m going to try them again.

After further research, I think the Iona Press I found is not the correct one.

Yes, I was going to mention that, in fact: There are several enterprises going by that name, it appears. Something called New Iona Press too – but I don’t think that is related either. There’s a Christian community (so they call themselves) on the island of Iona (in the Hebrides, off Scotland) and they seem to publish both this and that, using the Iona name. Makes it even harder to search for the right stuff.

I was thinking about the title earlier. The phrase appears in Pynchon’s “V.” (but it’s unclear to me what it refers to, I’ve never bothered to read “V.” and I don’t think I will any time soon either). Some references to the poet Swinburne too – who supposedly referred to the sea as “the great gray mother”, but I can’t find that phrase in any source (what I do find is that Swinburne referred to the sea as a great sweet mother, not a gray one).

Not that this matters greatly – but I suppose it’s semi-relevant, as it would certainly look as though the phrase (whatever the origin is) was not coined by Fred himself.
