Tahoe, DNA leading-to-family is speculation from among others one of the McNamara book researchers.

<he thinks cops used DNA collected from the murder scenes to find likely ancestors using DNA markers collected by ancestry websites.

Officers could then have established that ancestor’s family tree before looking through it to find likely suspects,>

Also it appears a genetic DNA test can be executed in as little as 24 hours.

The DNA matching is fascinating! What floors me, why didn’t anyone connect the dots… when he was caught stealing a hammer & dog repellent spray? Why didn’t he just go out of town to buy those items & pay cash.
I’m still hoping all that beautiful China, silver ware, jewelry & etc. are found in his belongings. Also curious why he chose areas like San Ramon, Danville, Walnut Creek & more. I get the Sacramento & Visalia areas, as he lived there. I’m impressed with Morf & his teams Pod Casts- if you haven’t followed His Criminology Podcasts on Facebook- you should. I do feel bad for his daughters having to go through this. Wonder if he had any friends.

I am cautious about anything right now. Rumors are also going around a family member (ex-wife/daughters) found something and turned him in. I think at this point a lot is speculation. Whatever it was, it appeared to happen in 6 days. Fastest DNA test ever. Has to be more to it.

I was thinking the same thing. This has happened pretty soon after the new information dump from LE to the general public, and I think there are 3 obvious options as to why:
1) They already had him in their sights and put out information they knew was fairly irrelevant to him as a POI, giving him a false sense of ease whilst they prepared to swoop in.
2) They had stumbled upon him through slightly less-than-legal DNA means and needed the help of the general public to form a valid chain of enquiry.
3) They had nothing until the information release and got lucky this time round (such as the potential for wife/daughters to come forward).

There is also another confusing aspect – the fact he has been arrested for the Maggiore murder when they are touting DNA as the key. My understanding is that this murder had nothing more than the shoelaces to link it to EARONS, unless the ‘latest technology’ they are talking about has managed to find previously undiscovered/usable samples on the laces….. or his LE past linked him to Brian Maggiore’s job at some point.

Fundamentally, this is early days and they have obviously had to rush for some reason, so the odd mistake in statements at this stage is forgivable. They are certainly 100% sure they have their man, so let’s just hope whatever the reasons for the anomalies, they haven’t ruined their case on a technicality.

I hope the LE that went through his beginnings, knew what they were looking for. He stole a lot of things, some large, some small. Hope they didn’t overlook anything.
Another question, why did he raise his daughters & His wife didn’t? That’s a little unusual.

I want to know why he stopped; as we know serial killers don’t stop until they die or are caught yet this guy seems to have stopped around 1986. Having a family isn’t (to me at least) the strongest reason. That’s 32 years of freedom he enjoyed.

Do we know of any other rapist/serial killer who "just stopped"?

The guy has been arrested for, what, 43 years ago + crimes involving burglary, rape and murder. Also touted in press that he was rather verbally abusive. Wouldn’t be a far stretch to say physical might be a possibility. From there, well, I’ll leave the speculation alone.

Hey everyone, if you listen to the press conference posted on the recent episode of criminology, a number of officials state that DNA first led to family, then to suspect after using discarded DNA. I’m just asking the open question, what led them to the family and what was that process?

It says in an article on Sacramento Bee (http://www.sacbee.com/news/local/crime/article209913514.html):

Sacramento investigators tracked down East Area Rapist suspect Joseph James DeAngelo using genealogical websites that contained genetic information from a relative, the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office confirmed Thursday.

The effort was part of a painstaking process that began by using DNA from one of the crime scenes from years ago and comparing it to genetic profiles available online through various websites that cater to individuals wanting to know more about their family backgrounds by accepting DNA samples from them, said Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Grippi.

It has been my understanding that using these genealogy websites to compare with criminal case DNA is not legal in USA… so how did they do this?

Apparently the private DNA databases will give up their information to law enforcement if LE presents a court order.

How did he steal 14 sets of China?

Thank you to Paul Holes, for his continued investigations on this case & out Z case.

(Contra Costa District Attorney Diana Becton was one of many law enforcement officials who spoke at the press conference. Becton made sure to thank Paul Holes, the subject of this Diablo article. Holes retired from his position as Chief Forensics Services Officer for the District Attorney’s office, but has continued to work on the case through the arrest of DeAngelo. "His work in using new technologies helped to solve this case," said Becton.)

So if that’s true, then they would have had a reason to look at his family DNA, it wouldn’t have been a hit from a blind search.

He apparently had a younger brother. I wonder if the brother committed a crime and his DNA was entered into the database.

The implication is that even a 4th cousin in a database would jump out as a familial match to the suspect’s DNA.

Boy oh boy do I hope/wish that investigators have Z’s DNA sample (CJB pants? Is it for sure a testable sample like the History Channel "doc" claimed?) to submit if this is considered kosher in legal terms.
