Hello all armchair detectives out there.
New member from Finland Europe here, so there might be some Z-like misspellings on my messages :) . I see lots of good sleuths writing on this site so I can’t add new info on the Z-case like you native English speakers, but maybe I can give ideas and new angles to view the case. For start, here is two ideas that I haven’t seen discussed here on site:

Lake Berryessa
On the murder site Hartnell said that Zodiac is ex-con from Colorado. Then later on hospital he named the place: Fern… Feathers…Fern Lock, Montana.
How about Fort Logan, Colorado.

From Wikipedia “The state used the site as a mental health center and the first patients were admitted in 1961. In 1991 the center was renamed to the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Fort Logan
How much people escaped from this place, dunno, but from other facility of Colorado Mental Health Institute:

http://legacy.historycolorado.org/sites … 940-82.pdf
(page 43 )
a total of 250 escapes (although this number included multiple escapes by the same individuals) between January 1968 and October 1971

Belli connection
I think Z got his thing on Belli after hoax caller on Dunbar show, so Belli connection is quite thin and maybe Z havent even heard of Belli before tv show at fall 1969 (correct me if I am wrong).

But In FBI vault on Belli file 1/9 starting on page 6, story in short:
Belli got threat letter from Mississippi on spring 1964. Letter was connected to JFK/Ruby case. Return address and name envelope was fake but name was R.A.Wagner. (initials RA in strange newspaper ad in 1975). FBI found suspect that had been moving around and writing lots Letters to editors, suspect wrote long letter to FBI (its in the file) and there is no zodiac style misspellings (he numbers things on letter 1) 2) )…the case was unclosed.

I think this idea is too far fetched, prolly nothing but still:
+ Belli
+ threat letter
+ R.A.
+ letters to editors
– far from California,
– no misspellings

Any thoughts?

I like the R.A. connection. That is worth looking into.

Hi Saasta!

The fact Hartnell first mentioned Colorado has always been something that bothered me. It seems the cops (possibly) lured him to "remember" Montana. I guess, at this point, it hasn’t mattered much, but Deer Lodge is something I never took as 100% accurate. I wonder what Bryan’s thoughts would be in regard to that today.

I think there were A LOT of strange people out there who were doing Zodiac related things. It certainly wouldn’t surprise me if this "RA" guy wrote some of them.

Welcome to the board. :)

…they may be dealing with one or more ersatz Zodiacs–other psychotics eager to get into the act, or perhaps even other murderers eager to lay their crimes at the real Zodiac’s doorstep. L.A. Times, 1969
