Hello Everyone!

My name is Dan (or Daniel) and I was born in the South Bay Area in 1970. As I was forming my first memories, Zodiac was still a regular feature on our local news — along with the Vietnam War, and all of the other lunacy that took place in the post ’60s world. Despite the fact that it was a very dark decade, I’m still a huge fan of all things 1970s, as well as sci-fi, ephemera (particularly old TV Guides), British comedy, classic crime dramas (Rockford Files, Harry O, Barnaby Jones, Columbo, etc.), and of course, most things digital. I’ve been interested in Z’s ciphers since about 2004, when I first discovered Tom Voigt’s website, where I was able to download tons of content (ciphers, letters, photos, etc.). I never actually signed up for his message board, though I wish I had. I’m currently living in Georgia, just outside of Atlanta.

I recently contacted Mr. Oranchak via his excellent Youtube video detailing the types of analysis that can be done on Z’s ciphers. I asked him to look at an idea of mine, and he was nice enough to run it through a program to see how likely some of the patterns were to occur. The initial results were somewhat promising, and I’m hoping to share them here to see what others think.

I don’t have a current pick as top Zodiac suspect, though I do believe he was probably (by the standards of his day) a very nerdy person. Based upon the work he put into his letters, ciphers, and costume, I imagine he may have been an avid hobbyist. I can see him being into plastic model kits, probably electronics (Heathkits), and even science fiction (possibly Analog Science Fact & Fiction magazine, or others). He was clearly a very evil person, and had a dominant personality when he "did his thing," but I imagine in his daily life he was probably a somewhat antisocial and awkward character. I don’t see him as a product of the hippie or drug culture of the day, but more of an angry, weird loner with an inferiority complex.

Welcome, Daniel! Thanks for signing up for the forum, and we look forward to your posts. I hope to make some time to run some experiments concerning the symmetry observations you uncovered via your grille method.

Hi Dan,

Welcome and thanks for taking the time to introduce yourself. I like ‘nerdy’. I think that’s a good overall way to describe it or ‘him’. ‘Hobbyist’ is good term too. A dabbler. I think he was creative and that may yet prove a useful thing to bear in mind when it comes to the ciphers. Helpful … not so much lol.

trav.

I don’t know Chief, he’s very smart or very dumb.

Hi Dan….welcome aboard!

…they may be dealing with one or more ersatz Zodiacs–other psychotics eager to get into the act, or perhaps even other murderers eager to lay their crimes at the real Zodiac’s doorstep. L.A. Times, 1969
