I’m a some-time lurker that found myself a bit drawn into this, so hi all!

I’m a programmer from Sweden. I’ve been looking at the zodiac ciphers on and off for the last two years or so, but the history channel docu seems to have pulled me back in.

I’ve been reading through many threads about different theories here, and currently I am looking into the letter distribution of the top/bottom and middle rows in Z340 (assuming the original 17×20 grid).

In order to try out ideas I made a simple web widget, you can try it out here: https://martinlindhe.github.io/zodiac-widget/

It only has a few features:
– allows you to hover a letter to light it up
– show letters only occuring in the top/bottom area, or only in the middle area
– change size of top & bottom area
– change width

This zodiac "widget" is currently pretty limited compared to other stuff I seen you guys built, but I hope it is useful to someone!

Many thanks to Largo for making the zodiac font I am using :))

PS. Only tried it out in Firefox, hope it works.

traveller1st, thanks for trying it out! I’m glad it worked in Chrome! Safari worked too. I don’t want to test IE :(

No I wouldn’t want to either lol. I’m sure the cipher guys will love this. (and everyone else).

this is a fantastic tool. very helpful for looking for patterns. one small suggestion -maybe change the hovered symbol color from grey to something brighter, like red. thanks for doing this.

Welcome, borkky! This is a wonderful web widget. Thank you for sharing it! I look forward to hearing more from you. There are some other programmers here as well so I believe you are in good company. :)

HI borkky. I am happy to see you here and hope to see more of your work. I really like the widget. I have been working on trying to figure out an explanation for the regional biases for the last several weeks. Let us know if you have any ideas. I only work with spreadsheets, so it is nice to see more interactive widgets. Thanks, smokie.

Hi smokie! I just made a longer post with some speculation of how the regional biases could have appeared here: viewtopic.php?f=81&t=3444&start=70#p57371

Caution – this is fully layman speculation from an outsider. Maybe fresh ideas, maybe delusional :-)

All we really know about Zodiac’s skills is from what he did in Z408. When it was solved so quickly, he probably combined what he knew with yet another step in order to adress the weaknesses he’d just learned about in the papers.

Assume he creates two cipher keys, splits the clear text in two parts, and encodes them separately.
First half with one cipher, the other half with the other cipher, resulting in a neat rectangle.
Then he makes two horizontal cuts, and rearranges the pieces.

This would make one cipher symbol mean different things in diffferent part of the text and by a minor tweak of his existing knowledge, he produced a much harder crypto.

Maybe we can continue the discussion in that thread instead, unless I got too off-topic

I’ve also considered that, two keys.
Perhaps the keys are both the numbers off the Eureka Card photocopy.
I tried manually applying them to the 340 once. But didn’t get very far.
