I don’t put too much stock in zodiac puzzles, but just realized that “Herb Caen” can be a play on Lawrence Kane. The etymology of Lawrence is Laurel, the leaf is often used as a cooking herb.

Of course it was probably actually about the actual Herb Caen. Goes to show how weird coincidences can be! But Zodiac mentions Herb Caen in one letter attributed to him.

Or what if it was exactly like you say, HERB CAEN? If Herb Caen points to Herb Caen, maybe we should look at HERB CAEN.
