Maybe he used two diff ones? If he did, certainly seems like he was doing something shady

I used to wonder how it was that he could be arrested over here as ‘KANE’, then arrested over there as ‘KLEIN’, then back over here as ‘BARTON’ and so on without any of the Police Departments discovering he’s using an alias, but I was thinking in todays World terms. Today you couldn’t get away with that because it all computerised. They would take you prints, upload them to the database, and within seconds your true identity would be discovered. But back then there were no computers, no ‘instant fix’, if you will, to unearthing a persons true identity. It was all done manually back then on a finger print card file system. If someone said their name was ‘Larry Barton’ then that’s who they’d book them as and only later, as in the case and point with his rap sheet, discover that the prints for Larry Barton, Lawrence Kane, Lawrence Kaye etc, all come back to one individual.

It’s intriguing that the VPD seemingly treated the "my name" cipher as cracked: "…when broken," they say, it reveals that the writer’s name is Kane, was born in 1924 and that he is Jewish. I remember coming across this before, in the FBI files, albeit worded slightly differently.

I wonder if this is something the VPD got directly from Harvey Hines? It seems to be based on Hines’ solution: Three Taurus symbols = 3 x 8 = 24. And the Jewish part has something to do with reading the symbols backwards.

I do know Harvey worked with the V.P.D. so I would say…"yes".

Well Morf I do know that he had two for certain. The one you point to, 101-12-2950 comes back to being issued out of NY, which seems right because as far as we have been able to determine, that’s where he was born. The other one he lists on his medical Application I posted a few posts back, comes back to being issued out of Missouri.

I’ve also been contacted by someone through my site that knew Cane while he resided in Lake Tahoe. I am told that upon Cane’s demise, his affairs were handled by Robert ‘Bob’ Maloff of Lake Tahoe, 1921 – 2011.

I do know Harvey worked with the V.P.D. so I would say…"yes".

Thanks, Tahoe – it’s certainly worth noting that they seemingly "bought" Hines’ cipher solution. If you do – buy it, I mean – there isn’t much room for doubt, is there? The suspect’s name is Kane and he was born in 1924 – seems an open and shut case!

I find it a bit odd that they simply went along with a solution which has never been validated by any expert – and which, to me, looks like nothing but yet another possibility. The Taurus symbol angle is interesting but hardly obvious. There’s nothing about that cipher which screams "I was born in 1924". So, yes – a bit odd that the VPD would simply go along with it.

Harvey Hines explained how he came up with the "Name Kane" solution. I don’t think he just told Captain Conway "This Cipher line here, when decrypted, reads ‘My Name is…. "Name Kane, born in 1924 under the sign of Taurus, with a Jewish Background" and Conway just believed it lol. No, Hines said that in his opinion the code reads backwards, or from right to left. Myself, having seen a Jewish Bible, know what he means here because Hebrew is written from right to left, that’s both in sentence and direction of reading, ie, the start of a Jewish book is what we in the West would consider the back page. Hines then said the circled 8’s meant to substitute the eighth letter to the left, and…. Tell you what, Harvey can tell you himself *lol.*

Again, if one considers Hines’ solution the right one Zodiac states plainly enough that his name is Kane and that he was born in 1924. Which is…well, it’s hard to misunderstand. If the VPD bought Hines’ cipher solution they must have been convinced – no less – that Kane was the Zodiac killer. And that is quite remarkable.

No, the ‘My Name Is’ line of Cipher has never been solved to any acceptable degree. There are many different theories and Hines is only one of them. But Conway seems to have bought into Hines reasoning on the cipher and whether that was his personal opinion, or one guided by a cipher expert, we can only speculate at.

I noted, as had others before me, that not only can it read from right to left, but if you flip it upside down it seems to read "Want …." and something after it. If you use the characters more than once, you can even make an argument for it saying "Want to know Name."
