News accounts at the time noted the involvement of the Postal Inspection Service. Is there a link anywhere to their reports? I’ve seen FBI reports online but never the Inspection Service reports. They would have taken an extensive look at the post marks and when and where the mail appeared to have been processed. For example, it is hard to look at the copies of the envelopes to the newspapers online and see whether they all were cancelled in the same city and/or on the same machine. And since some of the letters were cancelled on a Sunday that would probably have limited where the post office would have picked up letters.
Yes, I’d love to see those too. Especially with the "Discover America" machine cancels…
I think my theory of him mailing them from the airport, and some maybe when he wasn’t even in the U.S. are quite possible.

I have a hard time believing that a guy who couldn’t even spring for a set of new tires for the direly bald and mismatched ones on his car would take an international vacation.
However, mailing letters from an airport, pre-9/11, pre-Dan Cooper? Totally plausible.

We don’t know it was his car…

The Discover America cancellation wasn’t connected directly to airports. It was just a slug the Postal Service used to help promote travel. They used it in facilities all over the country. That’s not to say some of the letters couldn’t have been dropped at airports. Back then there was usually a postal facility with public access at the airport.
I know the Discover America campaign was used all over the country. And you see it on stamps, postcards etc. Especially with American Airlines. but I haven’t seen those machine cancels anywhere else. Of course Zodiac’s is some of the only mail I’ve looked at from the 60’s.

That one was around a long time. It was used on high speed cancelling machines between March 1966 and June 1971 in various facilities. It was only used in large processing facilities. You wouldn’t have seen it, for example, in a small post office like Vallejo. Most all the big facilities would have used that cancellation, at least for some period of time.
