Has anyone heard anything further about the hair that was tested for DNA in Cheri’s hand? They DO have DNA … is it the right type to send through the Ancestry type sites? Or test against that reddish hair found under the stamp?

As per the lab report Voigt posted earlier this year:

The California DOJ submitted the July 31st letters to the state crime lab in 2007. They first tested the VTH stamps (where Holt found the partial profile). The lab discovered "trace amounts of degraded human DNA" with "a high level of inhibitor" present. They go on to say, "High levels of inhibitors can prevent DNA amplification. Due to the nature of these samples, no further analysis was done at this time." Then they compared Voigt’s suspect Sam to the 2002 profile.

Maybe this "trace degraded DNA" is what Poyser’s talking about. The sample was too weak and insignificant to get a hit in 2007…which makes the 2002 profile seem even more questionable.

Again, a retired detective had taken these letters. Keel probably never saw them.

Re: Riverside: it’s mtDNA (or "maternal DNA"), which tends to be identical throughout bloodlines, so it can’t be used to uniquely ID a suspect. But it could theoretically be used to zero in on his family tree, which is what Paul Holes did with EAR’s nuclear DNA. There are maternal DNA genealogy services.

Hi,

With regard to the 2007 DOJ work on the letters, we must keep in mind that "The Devil is in the details," as Ed Blake of Forensic Science Associates told me in 2007. The thing we do not know about the work the DOJ did is how they extracted material from the stamps. Did they use the standard, accepted technique used by Alan Keel in the late 1990s or did they swab the back of the stamps? If they immersed the entire stamp, front and back, in the solution then the presence of DNA means NOTHING because it could still be from the front of the stamp!

Without context, these lab results can be very misleading. And if the DNA was from the back of the stamp, where it was protected from the environment like the DNA from the 1974 and 1978 letters, why was it so degraded? The impression I got from Alan Keel is that the DNA was very easily found and analyzed on the forgeries. There are none of the problems we see with the true Zodiac letters with the forgeries. Ever ask yourself why that is the case? There is definitely something "different" abut the real letters.

Dag,
Here’s a good you tube to learn about Investagator Paul Holes.

Hi Monarch,

Well, I’ve been rabid about that little hair since I first saw it in 2002, since KQ also had reddish brown hair. Unfortunately, it is such a small piece that even 15 years later they cannot analyze it for mt-DNA. They’d be running a huge risk if they sample it and don’t come up with anything. It still has to wait for some possible future advancement in the sensitivity of the technology.

News Flash. Mr X was eliminated by Toschi and Armstrong based on physical evidence linking the crimes and letters.
Just sayin.

Wow!
I’ve been away for a while, lurking on the EAR/ONS subreddit. Good to hear they are testing for Zodiac DNA again!

Hi Viking,

I hope this is not about the 2002 DNA.

As far as I know, Toschi and Armstrong never had any contact with Qvale, since he was only a witness on the night of the murder.

Oh, I see, Qvale. Meh, I suppose anything is possible but I find him highly unlikely.

I thought about that some after posting. Mr x was not a suspect, so maybe his prints and other info was not checked.

Me too. But there is one bit of circumstantial evidence that is very curious to me. The different cars involved in these crimes and Mr X’s unlimited access to such a wide variety of automobiles.

The only victim who actually saw a car and lived to tell about it is Mike Mageau (Kathleen Johns aside). Could have been one single car all along.

Hi,
I am not inclined to go off topic and present my case on this thread. Just read read my book to know what is truly the best evidence against Qvale. It’s not the different cars at each murder scene. Now back to our regularly scheduled DNA thread.
