Apologies if this is a dumb question.
But since they don’t have DNA from a victim or crime site, wouldn’t DNA from a letter/stamp just "prove" who the person was who wrote the letter? It wouldn’t prove that the DNA came from the killer, just from the letter writer.

Is the letter writer also the killer? Probably. But there also is a small chance that all the letters didn’t come from the actual zodiac. Maybe it was somebody playing a prank. Maybe somebody who committed one of the murders wrote the letters pretending to be zodiac, so his crime would get attached to another person (the serial killer).

Again, yes. If DNA proves that two letters were written by Jimmy Chitwood…..then we can also assume that Chitwood is The Zodiac. But it wouldn’t be 100% proof. Maybe Chitwood’s neighbor licked those two stamps for him. Maybe his best friend did. Maybe Chitwood just wrote a couple letters so he could troll the police/press.

For it to b 100% proof, you would have to match DNA from the letter to DNA from a crime scene.

Didn’t they just release info that a man’s dna/semen was found on a shawl worn by one of the Jack the Ripper victims. That led a lot of people to say "Jack the Ripper identity discovered." Was that guy the Ripper? Maybe. But couldn’t he also have just been a guy who had sex wtih the prostitute?

You are correct and many people have noted that. However, if the DNA was matched to a person, and that person was found to fit all the criteria (looked like the sketch, had a history of violence, could be linked to the locations, etc.) then it would certainly make it highly probable that the man had been identified.

As to the Jack the Ripper shawl, the concensus among "Ripperologists" is that the shawl did not even belong to the victim Catherine Eddowes and so any DNA obtained from it is irrelevant to the case.

Unfortunately the Ripper scenario was a complete f**kup, the guy who did the DNA testing made an error and instead a strand that was only present in 1% of the population (this was what he used to prove the suspect did it) , he was mistaken and it was actually the next strand which belongs to 99% of the population.

Thank You.
So DNA from a letter that led to an actual person wouldn’t be the smoking gun. But it would be a huge step in leading LE to the actual killer. The biggest step ever. If ALA’s DNA was found on two letters…..that would be pretty damning evidence. Or if the DNA led back to Jim Chitwood…..and Chitwood happened to be ALA’s neighbor, and we know ALA often had players lick envelopes for him…..boom, that’s pretty compelling evidence that would nail ALA.

If a name comes up from the envelopes, we know it’s probably the knock-out punch that is going to wrap this case up. It will lead LE directly to the killer.

Shawn, There are sure a lot of "ignorant trolls" at that site. They will soon be eating their words is what I believe, I hope they choke on them!

Yea, some haters there. At least the drawing of Hartnell’s car door is rather humorous.

They are a bunch of turds floating in the same toilet bowl. Reddit is trash.

This whole thing got messy. There is so much confusion around DNA.

I think for the sake of the case, it would be best to wait and see what happens and not keep posting about the DNA. If Zodiac is alive and he could be, he is more than likely reading these sites to learn what is being done. If he gets wind that VPD might have his DNA, that could compromise the case. We can always PM each other, but be aware that he could be a poster who is already here?

Excellent point, Sandy! Yes, if Z is still vertical, he very likely would be a member of this, or other, Zodiac sites. Nothing can be done about that, except DC the sites, which I don’t favor. IMO, I’d keep an eye on anyone who continually attempted to sow discord and confusion.
