Today is the 50th anniversary of the most famous heist in American history. On November 24th, 1971 a non-descript, middle-aged man hijacked a 727 jetliner and demanded $200,000. Several hours later, he parachuted from the rear of the jetliner and was never seen or heard from again.
In 2016, the FBI ended their investigation into the crime. it remains unsolved to this day.
“Murder will out, this my conclusion.”
– Geoffrey Chaucer
Richard McCoy Jr.
I still personally believe DB never survived the fall and the missing Richard “Dick” Lepsy fits this. He even liked wearing the same clothes as DB.
I recommend Citizen Sleuths for the best analysis of the actual Cooper hijack evidence to date.
That was too much!
Never heard of Richard Lepsy, but that’s interesting. He’d have needed to lose some weight, from the pictures I’ve seen.
I’ve never been able to buy into McCoy, and it’s similar to many of the known Zodiac suspects. McCoy must have been shown to the airline workers, and I find it impossible to think no one would have confirmed to have been him. McCoy resembles the sketch, as well. Unless you tell me that the FBI were so derelict in their diligence that they failed to show the man to those workers, I’d have to rule him out 100%.
Gian Quasar suggested that Jerry and Rita Alter might be behind the DB Cooper escapade, they certainly have a fascinating story that requires more research. After they died in 2017 a relative had their possessions valued… and amongst them was found a stolen painting worth $160 million. Apparently it looks like they lived well beyond their means for a good few decades and, if they had never sold this stolen painting, where did they get the money if not from another successful heist?
A few of the pictures of Jerry really do look like DB. And it appears he was cheeky enough to write a series of short crime stories – I wonder how many of them were based on reality?
