California Link Sought In Michigan Slayings
YPSILANTI, Mich. (UPI)-A nationwide manhunt was launched today for a second man in connection with the slayings of girls and young women in both Michigan and California. Police said they have issued a warrant for Andrew Manuel, alias Richard Diaz, 25. He is a known acquaintance of John Collins, 22, charged with murder in the last of seven slayings in the Ypsilanti-Ann Arbor university areea. Collins is also being investigated in connection with the slayings of three girls in the : Salinas area of California. Manuel, or Diaz, lived in the same rooming house as Collins while he was attending Eastern Michigan University here. Both men are believed to have gone to California together last June in a trailer rented by Manual and drawn by Collins’ automobile. The two returned here last month without the trailer. The warrant issued against Manuel charges him with larceny by conversion for failure to return the trailer, which was leased from the Hendricks Motor Sales in Ypsilanti Township. It is believed the trailer now is in possession of police in the Salinas, Calif., area. Authorities said they are “interested” enough in Manuel to seek his extradition if he is located in another state. He left Ypsilanti July 24, the day after Karen Sue Beineman, 18, an Eastern Michigan University freshman, disappeared. Two days later her body, badly battered and strangled, was found in a gully on the outskirts of Ann Arbor, five miles to the west of Ypsilanti. Authorities described Manuel ; as six feet, one inch tall, weighing 235 pounds, dark complexioned, with black hair and brown eyes. He has a tattoo on his left forearm which 1 may be an eagle. Two Michigan State police , detectives went to California ’ Sunday to confer with authorities in Salinas about the slayings there to determine if there may be a link between them and the string of unsolved murders here. The investigation also took on an international complexion when police said they were checking out an anonymous tip lo investigate a cabin in the Belle River area, northeast of Windsor, Ont. The cabin is owned by State Police Cpl. David Leik of the Ypsilami post, an uncle of Collins. Police said Miss Beineman was killed in Leik’s Ypsilanti home while he was vacationing. Police said, however, that they had no concrete reason to believe that Collins may be linked to any killings in Ontario. Leik said he had given his nephew a key to the house to feed the dog while the family was away. The body of Miss Schell, 20, Plymouth, Mich., was found stripped, stabbed five times and slashed in the throat July 7, 1968, outside Ann Arbor. Police reportedly were working on the theory male friends of Collins may have information that could link him to her slaying. The California victims were murdered in the Salinas area in late June and early July. Two of them were strangled and one was shot. “Police here hsve reason to believe Collins might have been in California at the time those killings were committed," Stadtfeld said. “Two officers from the crime center in Washtenaw County have gone by plane to Salinas and they will investigate what, if any, connection there is between the killings there and here.” A high-ranking Ann Arbor police officials said late Sunday Colins and possibly two other men had traveeld to California in a stolen house trailer. A fourth killing may also have brought Michigan police to California. On June 23, the body of 13-year-old Virginia Lynn Smith, Claremont, Calif., who had been strangled, beaten and raped, was found by two hikers in a creek bed in a deserted canyon two miles from her home. Detectives said she often accepted rides from friends who owned motorcycles. The first Salinas killing was June 17. The body of Susan Mary Hennesy, 17, was found on the campus of Seaside Kiel School. She had been strangled by her own belt. On July 7, the body of ai unidentified female in her earl 20s was found in heavy growth along side a roadway about 1 miles south of Salinas. Clad in a sweatshirt and walkin’ shorts, she had been killed by a single shot in the head. The latest victim was Roxie Ann Phillips, 17, from Milwaukee, Ore., whose nude body was found July 15 in a Carmel Woods trash pile near a lovers lane. Police said she had been dead about two weeks.
