They’re offering a sizable reward, for information on The East Bay Rapist & Killer. Another one, pretty close to home for some.
They say the guy might have jewelry & coins that he took.

It is about time that people put aside their misgivings about the misuse of DNA collection and biological property rights. If DNA samples were taken from the newborn and entered into a database by law, effectively screening the entire country, then countless victims would be saved from predators such as the East Area Rapist. Unfortunately for many it is too late, but the quicker these pathetic excuses for human beings are removed from society the better. Trying to capture and incarcerate someone after they have already slaughtered and destroyed so many lives, is simply not good enough. Prevention is always better than cure. Until we develop proactive policies, as opposed to reactive ones, many more unfortunate people will die. This will inevitably free up police time, so they can divert their resources to cases that do not involve a DNA element. But unfortunately this will not happen, the status quo will continue and we can carry on sobbing about the victims, instead of preventing them becoming victims in the first place.

it’s a classic argument between casting a wide net that catches the perpetrators and along with them lots and lots of innocent people vs casting a small net that lets some perpetrators go free but reserves the rights of those who have done nothing wrong. i respect your opinion and your right to have it, i just wholeheartedly disagree.

I respect your opinion too Masootz, but please elaborate on the innocent people who will be caught and convicted. :D

DNA evidence is like every other form of evidence, IMHO—imperfect. If they haven’t already, soon they will figure out how to fake the whole thing to frame an innocent person. Am I cynical about LE officials? Of course.

I too mistrust certain elements of law enforcement, but I suppose like any institution there will always be a minority that tarnish the majority by association. DNA is a powerful tool, that if used correctly is damning in many cases, but also can be used to exonerate the innocent and incarcerated. It could be used incorrectly by unscrupulous individuals, but these individuals already exist in the police force and judicial system, but we don’t scrap either of these. If we use the argument that there may be misuse of power or some innocent people may fall victim, when introducing a nationwide DNA screening program, then we have the reasoning not to have a police force, judicial system, government, and many other institutional bodies, to whom innocent people fall victim to. There are many miscarriages of justice, but it is the best system we have. To me the same applies to DNA screening, sure, misuses will occur, but surely no system is flawless and the benefits far outweigh the negatives. I rest the case for the defense.

Ask yourself this one question; if your family was raped and murdered by an individual, who sooner rather than later was apprehended by use of a DNA screening program that had been implemented, would you object. Or would you rather that person have eluded justice based on the apprehension and fears that a minority of officials may misuse their positions, that occurs in every institution already.

To people who don’t trust government generally (and there have been plenty of untrustworthy governments throughout the world’s history) the idea of government having the blueprint of every human being is not comforting.

If LE ever has any reason whatsoever to request a DNA sample from me I’ll be happy to comply. And I don’t think I’d be a likely candidate for someone to clone more instances of me… but I’d rather they not have that ability. Primarily, because it would confuse the heck out of my cat.

I wholeheartedly agree.

And for the sake of Marshall’s cat, let’s not keep any biological matter…only the test result, please. :D

When that happens you’ll be posting the same answer twice.

When the women of the world realize more instances of me can be created, I doubt they’ll stop at just two…

Mass DNA testing has happened on lots of occasions, lots of different countries lots of different cultures different laws and places of freedoms and liberties. We have seen great results on mass dna testing not only for catching the guilty but prooving of the innocent .. A great thought process from Benny Franklin who wrote “that it is better one hundred guilty persons should escape than that one innocent Person should suffer.” The first use of DNA shold be to exonerate the innocent which in turn should narrow the field of the guilty. Imagine how many gaols would be needed if everyones dna was data based and crossed referenced.. imagine the crime rate plummeting imagine the outrage. imagine a brave new world.
