Gaikowski identified as heterosexual until the end of 1969 when he announced to his friends that he had decided he was gay. That’s according to many people who knew him.

It is very uncommon. You cannot decide in one day. So he had to "try" before . He was seen with men or he had relationships with men after ’69?

Most of San Francisco in the 1960s was uncommon.
Gaikowski had male friends in the gay community. I have no data on Gaikowski dating women after 1969.

I guess I need to bump this because at least one person elsewhere is confused. Let me put the important part in bold:

Maybe that’ll help?
You don’t decide to be gay! You don’t wake up one day and say to yourself, "that’s it, no more women for me, from now on I am gonna go with men." (I was going to be way more crude here but decided against it!) Also how did he know he liked gay sex if he just "decided"? You are either gay, straight, or bi. It may take time to realise which but you generally know when you are in your teens or by your early twenties which way you swing.
The idea that Gyke woke up and "decided" is ludicrous. Maybe be had tried both but not been out as gay before, and kept it hidden, and decided either the time was right or he didn’t want to cover it up any more. At that time, and in that area, maybe he felt he could tell his friends and they would be accepting, whereas before he was worried they might shun him.
He was in Ireland for LHR.
He wrote a newspaper article about Ireland while in Ireland.
A man on a commune Gaikowski joined after returning from Ireland wrote a letter saying Gaikowski had been in Europe until arriving in March (I think).
Even if he was not in Europe, there’s no evidence or reason to think he was in California.
You don’t decide to be gay! You don’t wake up one day and say to yourself, "that’s it, no more women for me, from now on I am gonna go with men."
Never heard the term "came out of the closet?"
That’s what Gaikowski did. Unless he and a bunch of other people lied.

Quit spreading misinformation like an idiot.
The Lake Herman Road murders were on December 20, 1968. There is no placing Gaikowski overseas until into January 1969, and even then it’s sketchy.

Coming out of the closet is not "deciding to be gay" it is deciding not to hide it any more. Surely you understand this?

How about this: Gaikowski came out of the closet by telling his friends that he had settled on a sexual identity. Is that better? Why do you even care anyway?
Bringing this back on topic…
The most interesting thing for me in relation to Gyke, is the description by the Pacific Union College women (EDIT: at Lake Berryessa). Specifically:
– thin lips
– small ears (It appears that Gyke’s left ear is smaller than the right)
– straight eyebrows. Gyke’s are straight but also prominent which would make them more noticeable
Of course, we can’t prove this was The Zodiac but the ‘white belt/t-shirt’ and ‘bunched up at the front’ lead me to believe it was.
I’m not aware of any other known or ‘key’ suspects/POIs fitting those (very specific) descriptions as well as Gyke.
Not to mention he was described as nice-looking by the women. I read something not too long ago that said there was actually a couple farther ahead of where the women were sunbathing, with the speculation that they were the intended victims.
