"zodiac" ran off to the Presdio and hit the gas before the searches even extended and went there.

If you take a look at him he doesn’t look like Zodiac at all. He looks short and chubby with facial hair.

In the discussed photo in the first post that bothers the OP so much, I would suggest
that standing in the ‘foreground left to right’, we see: an unidentified patrolman, probably

We may never know for certain who the background people are.
That said, I would suggest there is at least a trivial probability that the person you have
specified in the above paragraph is Leroy Sweet, Assistant traffic manager of Yellow Cab,

Tom, let me suggest a course of action for you that might strengthen the case for Gaikowski …. analyze the Zodiac letters for the use of AP Style.

Journalists use writing rules peculiar to the profession known as AP Style. Gaikowski would likely use this professionally, and traces of it would probably seep into personal letters.

I did it once a few years back and posted a thread about it somewhere on this site. You might be able to search for it. My feeling was inconclusive. But some of the writing choices that Zodiac makes are peculiar and consistent with oddities of journalism. One example that I can recall is that Z hyphenates teen-agers, which journalists do (or used to do) and most people don’t.

You might go and run the letters by a journalism professor and see what he/she says.
